Alice Lucille
Cavner
August 6, 1926 – January 19, 2022
Alice Lucille Cavner, the daughter of James Merle and Lucille (Arnold) Gamble, was born on August 6, 1926, at home near Coin Iowa. She passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Accura Healthcare of Stanton, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 5 months, and 13 days.
Alice was raised in Coin and attended and graduated from Coin High School in 1943. After graduation, she attended Commercial Extension School of Business in Omaha, NE and graduated in June of 1945. Alice took the Civil Service Test at the Omaha Post Office and three weeks later was offered a job at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where she worked for 2 years. Alice married Lawrence Cavner of College Springs, Iowa on September 13, 1945. This date was chosen because her brother Bob was home on military leave and was leaving the next day. Since Lawrence was ranked "1A" and was expected to be drafted, she kept working in Omaha until March of 1946, when they rented a farm near Coin. Two years later, they moved northeast of Stanton and rented a farm owned by E.M. Coppage. All four of their children were born while they lived there. On March 1, 1963, they moved to the "South Hill" in Stanton. In 1966 Alice went to work for the Stanton Community School as the secretary in the high school office. She retired from SHS in June of 1990 after 24 years. After Lawrence passed away in May of 2008, she lived at home until moving to the Stanton Care Center in 2009. She moved to Regency Retirement Residence in Red Oak for a few years before returning to the care center where she lived until her death. Alice loved to be busy, whether it was gardening, baking, sewing, taking pictures, leading the Stanton Cub Scout Pack, entertaining all five grandchildren at once, or attending church and senior citizens functions. At family meals Alice never sat down until everyone had everything needed. "Sit down, Alice!" was heard on many of these occasions. She received the Stanton Ole Award in 1999. Alice was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, honorary member of the First Christian Church in Red Oak and many other community organizations.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lawrence and brother Dr. Robert (Bob) Gamble and sister-in-law Martha Gamble. She is survived by four children – Linda Nelson (Joel Myers) of Dallas Center IA, Jan Black (Winfield Mayne) of Villisca, James Cavner of Stanton, Anita Long-Koynock (John) of Naples FL, seven grandchildren – Kyle Long (Audrey) of Scottsbluff NE, Jamison "J.D" Long (Katelyn) of Papillion NE, Jesse Nelson (Shannon) of Ankeny IA, Sarah Wilson (Aaron) of Grimes IA, Justin Black (Emily) of Oronoco MN, nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn.
