Obituary

Barbara Charlotte Lundgren, the daughter of Carl Harry and Lila Olivia (Anderson) Nelson was born November 10, 1924 in Red Oak, Iowa. She passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Accura Healthcare, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 23 days.

Barbara was raised on a farm in the Wales area. She attended school at Wales and played basketball on the Wales Lincoln state qualifying team. She was an excellent basketball player and if the boy's team was missing a teammate for practice, she would fill in. In 1942, Barbara graduated from Wales Lincoln High as class valedictorian. Barbara then attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in business administration. After college, she worked in the bookkeeping department for Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Barbara was musically talented and played several instruments in the band and orchestra. On September 4, 1949, Barbara was united in marriage to Lavon I. Lundgren in Red Oak, Iowa. Barbara loved being a homemaker, mother and farm wife. For 41 years, she enjoyed working alongside Lavon on the farm, with field work, the livestock and even helping to repair equipment. Barbara helped all their children with 4-H projects, since she herself had won purple ribbons at the Iowa State Fair with pickled peaches and later homemade Swedish rye bread. She was always willing to travel on 4-H trips and help with the kids. While on the farm, Barbara raised a large garden, which was always canned or frozen for later use. She enjoyed spending time with her children, attending their piano lessons, school events, sporting events and even trapping, hunting, and fishing with Karl. All those interests passed down to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If they could make an event, Barbara and Lavon were there. Her hobbies included, bowling, coffee each week with her lady friends, cooking, baking, carpentry, poetry, and playing scrabble which she always won. Barbara was a life-long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was active in the LCW, serving as local and district chairman. After retiring and moving to Red Oak in 1989, she became an avid bird watcher and enjoyed making sure the birds and squirrels were also fed. Barbara's life was dedicated to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and siblings. She always made family first.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lavon on March 31, 2006; an infant daughter; sister and her husband, Annette and William Anderson; and brother and his wife, Harry and Kay Nelson.

Barbara is survived by four children: Jolene (Dan) Muldowney of Sioux City, IA; Kristine (David) McAninch of Green Bay, WI; Carol (Patrick) Barnes of Bettendorf, IA; and Karl (Shelley) Lundgren of Red Oak, IA; 13 grandchildren: Ruth (Bryant) Lekander, Mike (Allison) Muldowney, Susan Muldowney, Sara (Ryan) Galloway, Kathryn (Marcus) Scharping, Peter McAninch, Jessica, Melissa, Andrew and Rachael Barnes, Benjamin, Brooke, and Ryan Lundgren; 7 great-grandchildren: Hailey Lekander, Austin and Katelyn Muldowney, Jack and Beatrice Galloway, Alex and Macalister Scharping; and sister, Karen (Dennis) Requist of Sioux Falls, SD; nieces, nephews, other relatives in Sweden and many friends.
