Betty Jean Huston, the daughter of Joseph H. and Bertha M. Byrd Rigby was born August 23, 1934 in Canoe, Alabama. She passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 77 years and 5 days. Betty was raised in Mobile, Alabama and in 1950 graduated from Baker High School. She attended Spring Hill College and later City Hospital Nursing School, graduating as a Registered Nurse in the spring of 1954. R.C. and Betty met on a military base in Mobile while attending a dance, and "it was love at first sight." On September 11, 1954, Betty was united in marriage to R.C. Huston in Mobile, Alabama. After R.C. was discharged from the military, they moved to Ames, Iowa and R.C. attended Veterinary School at Iowa State University. While R.C. was in school, Betty worked at Mary Greely Hospital in Ames and following Doc's graduation received the PHT award, "putting husband through school." In 1962, Doc practiced veterinary medicine in Alabama and then in 1964 in Rockwell City, Iowa. In 1973, Betty and Doc made Red Oak their home where Doc co-owned a vet clinic. Betty worked for Montgomery County Memorial Hospital from 1973 through 1995 when they moved back to Mobile to care for a loved one. Her nursing career spanned over 50 years. In 2005, they returned to Red Oak. Betty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Oak. While Betty cared for so many people, her family was the most important part of her life. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son, Daniel Huston; grandson, Lee Huston; two brothers: Harold J. Rigby and Robert A. Rigby and sister, Barbara Ogwynn. Betty is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. R.C. Huston of rural Red Oak, IA; four children: Dr. Pat Huston and wife Cindy of Red Oak, IA; Kim Smith of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; Dr. Mike Huston and wife Jackie of Jasper, FL; and Cathy Nelson and husband Chris of Atlantic, IA; daughter-in-law, Kim Huston of Hastings, IA; seven grandchildren: Este Peterson and husband Klint, Abby Huston, Chad Hill, Kyle and Ben Nelson, Jacob and Claire Huston; great-granddaughter, Audrey Jean Hill; sister, Minnie R. Clary of Ocean Springs, MS; sister-in-law, Arleigh Rigby of Mobile, AL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Red Oak. Burial in Emerson Cemetery, Emerson, Iowa Father Tom Kunnel, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Family requests memorials in lieu of flowers to Heartland Hospice of Red Oak.
