Obituary

Billy Owen Jones, the son of Dan and Louise (Hein) Jones was born January 9, 1935, on a farm in Day County, South Dakota. He passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Accura Healthcare, Stanton, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 12 days.

Bill was raised in South Dakota and graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1953. He then entered the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. In 1956, Bill was honorably discharged from the Army and furthered his education at Northern College in Aberdeen, earning his Degree of Education. On April 11, 1958, Bill was united in marriage to Marlys Brown at Redfield, South Dakota. Bill's career path led him to teach math and coach various sports including track, football and basketball in Hecla, South Dakota. He then went to work for State Farm Insurance, beginning his 31-year journey as an agency manager, retiring in 1993. In 1972, Bill and Marlys settled in Red Oak, Iowa, where he became deeply involved in the Red Oak community. Over the years, Bill was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church (church council), Red Oak Optimist Club (past president), American Legion, V.F.W., Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Court of Honor, SWI Senior Golf (past president), the Merc Coffee Club (secretary/treasurer), YMCA (board member), Regency Retirement (past vice president), and the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where he served as a courier and made deliveries for Meals on Wheels over 30 years. He also served the Montgomery County Board of Eminent Domain, Good Samaritan Care Center (board of directors), Red Oak Bowling Association (board member) and past president of the Red Oak Country Club. In his leisure time, Bill enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing card games (especially bridge), and boating with his family. He was an avid supporter of Iowa State University athletics and cherished attending his grandchildren's school events and athletic games.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlys on June 25, 2013; granddaughter, Cheryl Jones; three brothers: Gordon, Bud, and Pat; and two sisters: Juanita and Connie.

Bill is survived by daughter, Karen Jones of Stanton, IA; son, Joseph Jones of Red Oak, IA; three grandchildren: Lindsey (Ben) Carfrae of Urbandale, IA, Jenny Gettler of Stanton, IA, and Chris Jones of Stanton, IA; eight great-grandchildren; Jameson and Andrew Carfrae, Evan, Addelyn and Owen Gettler; Alexa, Hunter and Brooklyn Gilleland; and a great-great-grandchild, Mason Spring; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Burial with Military Honors at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa

Visitation with the family at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Sunday, June 30, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
