Obituary

Carol Jean Novacek the daughter of James and Anna (Zeleny) Koutsky was born September 15, 1932 in Omaha, NE. She passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Her family owned butchering, lumber, coal and furniture businesses in South Omaha and a farm outside Gretna, NE where she grew up and attended one room primary school. The second of three daughters, her father was a championship level gymnast and taught Carol and her sisters how to perform bar routines in their barn. Her family later moved into Omaha where her father worked as a carpenter before purchasing a farm between Afton and Thayer, Iowa and moving the family there. Carol remained in Omaha with friends and graduated from Omaha Central High School and then attended the University of Omaha (now UNO) at a time when women attending college for other than a teaching career was rare. She worked for Wonder Bread Company in Omaha. Carol met Adolph (Audie) Novacek through her extended family as she was growing up. Carol and Audie were wed March 29, 1953 in Omaha. The couple lived in Omaha, Red Oak, IA; Carroll, IA; Columbus, NE; and Omaha again before moving to Red Oak, IA in 1960. Carol worked as an administrative assistant / secretary and other roles over the years, taking a 7-year sabbatical to raise her young children. She worked at Union Carbide Battery, Learning Resources Center, Apria Healthcare, and Montgomery County Memorial Hospital as well as owning a mail order baking business, The Pastry Cart, over the years. She was a member of the Red Oak United Presbyterian Church and Dorcas Circle. She was also an active member of two bridge clubs. She was a member of the Omaha Czech Cultural Club in Omaha, NE.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Anna (Zeleny) Koutsky, her husband of 59 years, Audie, and her sister, Joyce.
She is survived by her children, Bronwyn (Michael) Kutsch of Austin, TX and Bradley Novacek of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Brandon (Lisa) Kutsch of Round Rock, TX, Amanda Kutsch and husband Dr. Kyle Page of Johnston, IA, Katrina Kutsch of Austin, TX, Maria Novacek of Phoenix, AZ, James Novacek of Flagstaff, AZ, Stephanie Novacek of Phoenix, AZ; two great-grandsons: Joshua and David Kutsch of Round Rock, TX; sister, Diana (Perry) Driskill of Afton, IA; two nieces: Candice Tobin of Brooklyn Park, MD and Laura (John) Pfaltzgraff of Des Moines, IA; one nephew, Russ Driskill of Cedar Rapids, IA; along with many extended family members and friends in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, California, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
The family would like to thank the many nurses and staff at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak for the loving care they provided to our mother these past seven years.

Celebration of Life Service will be held
Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.
at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Oak Public Library.
