Carol Monroe Peterson, the son of Luther C. and Hilda (Lundberg) Peterson was born February 25, 1919 on a small farm southwest of Stanton, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 5 months and 19 days. Carol was raised on a farm near Stanton. He was a 1935 graduate of Stanton High School and attended junior college in Red Oak during the 1935-1936 school years. From 1936 to 1940 he lived and worked in Los Angeles, California, and attended college part-time. In September of 1940 he enlisted in the California Army National Guard. Initially in the infantry, he transferred to the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as a bombardier in the European Theater of World War II seeing action in Italy and southern France with the 37th Squadron, 17th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force. Carol was united in marriage to Mary E. Peterson of Underwood, Iowa on December 17, 1942 in Santa Ana, California. To this union four sons were born, Carl, Michael, Darwin and Phillip. After his honorable discharge on June 16, l945, they returned to the Stanton area and farmed for many years. When their family was grown, Carol and his wife, Mary, took some time traveling. They saw much of the United States and enjoyed a trip to Israel and a trip to Italy. They also enjoyed traveling to visit their children and their families. Carol was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak, where he served in various capacities. Carol was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Grace Butler, Lillian Peterson and Eleanor Hallquist; two brothers, Harlan Peterson who was killed in action in during WWII and L. Claire Peterson; grandson, Stephen Peterson. Carol is survived by his wife Mary Peterson of Stanton, Iowa; four sons: Carl Peterson and wife Darlene of King City, MO; Michael Peterson of Tiffin, IA; Darwin Peterson and wife Susan of Coralville, IA; Phillip Peterson and wife Rebecca of Bluefield, VA; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace Baptist Church, Red Oak, Iowa Burial will take place at the Arlington Cemetery, rural Villisca, Iowa with Military Rites. Pastor Gary Walters, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak.
