Catherine Ann Carder, 83 of Red Oak, Iowa passed away on Monday, January 31, 2011, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, IA at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 17 days. Catherine Ann was born on May 14, 1927 to Thomas I. and Lois Hatswell Smith on a farm near Macedonia, IA. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, Anna M. Hatswell in Red Oak. She graduated from Red Oak High School in l945 and attended Red Oak Junior College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Catherine Ann was united in marriage to Thomas T. Carder on September 19, 1948 in Red Oak. Catherine Ann was a homemaker and volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother, a junior Girl Scout leader, and served many jobs at her church, the First Congregational U.C.C. She was also a mobile meals driver for many years, and did volunteer work at the Montgomery County Family YMCA. Catherine Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, her son Michael T. Carder; sisters: Frances Bergen and Barbara L. Scherle; and brothers: Don L. Smith and Lewis Bud Smith. Catherine Ann is survived by her husband Tom of 62 years; daughter Ann M. Carder and husband Mark Jackson of Red Oak, IA; two granddaughters: Brooke Carder White and husband Ben of Denver, CO and Mickie Franklin and spouse Michelle Kimble of Nevada, IA; step-granddaughter Samantha Jackson Summers and husband Shane of Kansas City, KS; three great-grandchildren: Nevada and Aspen White, and Mersadie Franklin; brother T.I. Smith, Jr. and wife Marjorie of Humboldt, IA; and sister Beverly Boileau of Glenwood, IA. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wilson Performing Arts & Education Center, Red Oak, IA. Rev. Elizabeth Dilley, Officiating Inurnment will take place at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak. Memorials may be directed to: the First Congregational Church U.C.C., Montgomery County Family YMCA or Wilson Performing Arts & Education Association, all in Red Oak.
