Obituary

Charles Edward Lombard, the son of James and Edna Boyce Lombard was born April 16, 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska. He passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Creighton Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 57 years, 10 months and 4 days. Charlie was born in Omaha. When he was a young boy his family moved to Stanton, Iowa. In 1968, Charlie graduated from Stanton High School. Charlie was united in marriage to Lorraine Black on October 4, 1968. They moved to Red Oak, Iowa where he went to work for Wilson Concrete and D & L Company. Charlie entered the U.S. Army on November 24, 1969, serving in Vietnam and Germany. He was honorably discharged on November 13, 1972. Charlie continued his military service with the Iowa Army National Guard 1168th Transportation Company in Red Oak for the next 23 years. Along with his service in the National Guard, Charlie was also a mail carrier. He began his career with the U.S. Post Office in March of 1973. He was a faithful mail carrier to those he delivered mail to, usually with a smile on his face. In December of 1990, Charlie was deployed with the 1168th to serve in Desert Storm. Following his return home, he continued his mail route. Charlie was united in marriage to Linda Hanson on December 5, 1990 in Red Oak, Iowa. In 2003, he retired from the postal service. Charlie enjoyed all sports: wrestling, basketball, football, baseball, playing softball and bowling. He loved wrestling and would call his daughter, Melissa every Monday night and talk for hours. Charlie loved to travel and visit family. He treasured time spent with family and friends. For many years he assisted with parking cars at home football games at Russ Benda field. Charlie was a member of the American Legion Lorraine Post #67 of Red Oak, Montgomery County Veterans Court of Honor and a past member of the Eagles Lodge. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Patricia Lombard and Rosemary Sparr; and 3 brothers: James, Lawrence and Joseph. Charlie is survived by his wife, Linda Lombard of Red Oak, IA; children: Shelly Baker of Shelbyville, KY; Melissa Spencer and husband Robin of Shelbyville, KY; Kim Sowers and friend Michael Nelson of Red Oak, IA; and Chad Matheny and wife Molly of Portland, OR; 11 grandchildren: Alyssa, Devon, Jacob, Mercedes, Marissa, Mecala, Brooks, Cheyanne, Kyle, Cole and Dixon; brothers: Robert Lombard and wife Myrna of Red Oak, IA; George Lombard and wife Carolyn of Red Oak, IA; and William Lombard and wife Bonnie of Omaha, NE; sisters: Carole McMullen and husband Frank of Massena, IA; and Nancy Swentor and husband Robert of Council Bluffs, IA; step-brothers: Jerry Lukehart and wife Chic of Bellevue, NE; and Rick Lukehart and wife Debby of Red Oak, IA; many nieces, nephews and other relatives along with many friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak Burial in Mamre Cemetery, Stanton, IA Rev. Alan Dean, Officiating Military Graveside Honors by Iowa Army National Guard 1168th Transportation Company. Visitation with the family present on Friday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home for 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial is being established in Charlie's name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
