Obituary

Charles Edward Shipe, the son of John O. and Lillian L. McBaine Shipe was born, May 3, 1927 in Columbia, Missouri. He passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at his home in Red Oak, Iowa after a brief illness, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 29 days. Charlie was raised in Columbia, MO, graduating from University Laboratory High School in l945. He entered the U.S. Navy on April 26, 1945, serving in Asiatic Pacific Theater operations in the Philippines aboard submarine chaser #SC1014 . The sub-chaser was decommissioned and Charlie was reassigned to the LST 895. Charlie was honorably discharged on July 15, 1946, returning to Columbia, MO. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Windsor on August 27, 1950 in Columbia, MO. Charlie began working with Dannen Mills Feed out of St. Joseph, MO; and in 1951 was transferred to Red Oak, IA. He later became parts manager for Fox-Finley Chevrolet. Charlie then sold life insurance for State Bond & Mortgage out of New Ulm, MN. He returned to the parts business working at Big A Auto Parts, retiring in l991. Charlie was an avid outdoorsman; fishing, hunting, camping and golfing. He especially enjoyed hunting turkeys in Missouri. He loved being on the water riding his airboat and pontoon. Charlie was a member of: First United Methodist Church, founder and charter member of the Izaak Walton League, Nishna Valley Rifle & Pistol Club, American Legion Lorraine Post #67, and past member of the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce. He was a great speaker, and a member of Toastmasters. He wrote a speech about Smokey ""Man's Best Friend"" and won local and district speech contests. Charlie enjoyed fish fries where he fried fish for his family, coffee clubs and the Red Oak Fire Department, of which he was an Honorary Fireman. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; brother: Clyde Shipe; and son-in-law: Rick Hoover. Charlie is survived by his wife: Carolyn Shipe of Red Oak, IA; daughter: Deb Hoover of Red Oak, IA; son: Steve Shipe and wife Sue of Bennington, NE; three grandchildren: Caleb Hoover and special friend Elisabeth Welch of Ft. Collins, CO; Jeremy and Kelsey Shipe of Bennington, NE; sister-in-law: Marjorie Shipe of Polson, MT; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Rev. Alan Dean, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Thursday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Family requests memorials in lieu of flowers to the Red Oak Fire Department. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
