Charles Webster Wilson, the son of C. Frank and Esther (Jones) Wilson was born February 5, 1919 in Red Oak, Iowa. He has been a long time resident of Red Oak. Charles passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 2 months and 10 days. Charles attended Red Oak Schools, graduating with the class of 1936. He attended Junior College in Red Oak for one year, and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he received an Engineering degree in June of 1941. Charles was united in marriage to Norma Janet Larsen on June 29, 1941 in Buena Vista County, IA. After graduating from I.S.U., he entered his small family's manufacturing company which produced concrete culverts and various products for road work in Montgomery County. The company had 6 to 8 employees at that time. World War II was on the horizon and Charles entered the service and trained as an engineer on the B-29 Bomber Gun-sight Control System, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge in l946. After returning home from the service, Charles became a foreman at Wilson Concrete Co. In 1950, he became President and CEO and began expanding the business into the Council Bluffs and Omaha, Nebraska areas in the structural precast and architectural industry. Concrete products were in demand for the post-war reconstruction and Wilson Concrete began serving contractors and architects in four midwestern states. The company produced all sizes of concrete pipe and building components for roads, bridges, railroads, parking structures, hospitals, ballpark stadiums, etc. Wilson Concrete eventually had manufacturing plants in four midwestern states. When Charles sold the company, at age 81, Wilson Concrete had grown to over 700 employees which included many long-standing engineers, managers of various divisions, office staff, etc. He was founder of Oakview Construction Co., headquartered in Red Oak. He was currently President of Gold Key Homes & Centennial Properties, developer of homes and commercial sites, including the Red Coach Inn. Charles has been involved on numerous boards and associations. He became President of Mo-Sai Institute in l962, a National Architectural Association. He is past President of Iowa Manufacturers Association. He served for 20 years on the Board of Directors of Iowa Resources Inc. formerly known as Iowa Power & Light, headquartered in Des Moines, IA. He served on the board of the Hoover Library Association and Board of Directors of Bellevue University and was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from Bellevue University in 2001. Charles served as President of the National Precast/Prestressed Concrete Industry (PCI) in 1967-1970. He received the coveted Medal of Honor for extraordinary service to PCI and the Precast/Prestressed Industry in l994. He became a Fellow at the International Prestress conference held in Washington, D.C. in 1994. Charles was one of only 50 distinguished innovators in 50 years, being named a Titan at the 50th Anniversary of the Precast/Prestressed Industry held in Atlanta, GA in 2004. Charles has served the Boy Scouts of America in various regional volunteer positions for more than 60 years and has earned the Scouting Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards. Charles is a past Commander of the Knights Templar Masonic Order and is also a Za-Ga-Zig Shrine member. He also served as Commander of VFW Post #2265 in Red Oak. Charles was a member of the American Legion and B.P.O.E. #1304 Elks. Charles has been active in community and economic affairs in the Red Oak area, having been on the Industrial and Contact Committee promoting Red Oak and helping acquire industry for our area. Charles and his wife Norma have been awarded the Chamber of Commerce "Spirit of Red Oak Award" and honored as Red Oak Schools Homecoming Grand Marshals and Red Oak Junction Days Grand Marshals. He helped in the development of the YMCA, Montgomery County History Center, and the renovation of the Red Oak Public Library, High School Technology Center and the Performing Arts Center. He is a past President of the Red Oak Country Club and it was in his tenure that a major renovation was developed and proceeded. He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church serving as deacon along with other positions. Charles hobbies were fishing, hunting, snow skiing, travel and horseback pack trips with "the guys" in the Tetons of Wyoming. He enjoyed reading (especially history), gardening, music and live theatre. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Marion and Wayne; and infant great-grand-triplets. Charles is survived by his wife of 71 years, Norma Wilson of Red Oak, IA; daughter, JoAnne Amoura of Omaha, NE; sons: C. Randall Wilson of Red Oak, IA; and Robert D. Wilson and wife Pamela of Kentwood, MI; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be Friday, April 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Red Oak Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Len Taylor, Officiating Masonic Service will be held Thursday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Red Oak First Baptist Church, Montgomery County Family YMCA or Boy Scouts of America.
