Columbia Magnuson, the daughter of Grant and Columbia (Kidwell) Platt was born August 17, 1924 at Edwards, Missouri. She passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 9 days.
Columbia was raised in Montgomery County where she attended country school and later Red Oak High School. She was united in marriage to Elver L. Magnuson on March 5, 1944 at Stanton, Iowa. In 1946, they moved to the Magnuson home farm and she worked alongside Elver. From 1966 until 1971, Columbia also worked as a cook at Good Samaritan Society. They made their home in Red Oak in l971 where she worked 3 years for Red Oak Greenhouse and from 1974 until she retired in 1987, for D & L Company. Columbia enjoyed sewing and doing many alterations for people, needle point, camping and tending to her flowers. She was a great cook, mastering all the Swedish dishes for her husband. Columbia was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. She enjoyed helping make over a 100 kimonos along with the ladies circles that were sent all over the world.
Columbia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elver on November 12, 1992; two sisters: Fern England and Ruby Butler; and four brothers: Donald, Denzel, Ray and Keith.
Columbia is survived by her four children: Daryl (Ardith) Magnuson of Carbon, IA, Carolyn (Randy) Vanderhoof of Red Oak, IA, Kathryn (John) Powers of Emerson, IA, and Donald (Vicki) Magnuson of Bellevue, NE; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Roy (Gretchen) Platt of Cottonwood, AZ; sister-in-law, Elsie Johnson of Stanton, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
