Delma Cornelia Sundberg, the second daughter of Adolph "A.M." and Della (Olson) Mainquist, was born November 15, 1915 on a farm 6 miles southeast of Stanton, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 98 years, 6 months and 12 days. Delma grew up on a farm 6 miles southeast of Stanton, Iowa. She attended Spring Valley school during her elementary years, and attended high school in Red Oak, Iowa where she lived with her grandmother during the school year. She also attended one year at Red Oak Junior College. Delma followed her mother and sister into a teaching career. Before marriage to Virgil Sundberg on June 29, 1938 at her parent's home southeast of Stanton, Delma taught rural school at Scott #1 for three years. After Virgil's death in 1954, she renewed her teaching certificate and took summer school and correspondence courses to complete her Associates' degree at Clarinda Junior College (now Iowa Western) and then her B.A. at Northwest Missouri State University in l966. Delma taught 4th grade at Stanton Elementary School for 21 years until her retirement in 1980. Delma moved from the farm southwest of Stanton where she and Virgil raised their children, into Stanton in1972, and subsequently to her long-time residence in Stanton on Center Street in l981. Delma remained there until she took up residence at Stanton Care Center in 2005. Delma was active in the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton and in the Faith Community Church in Red Oak, in Senior Citizens, Twentieth Century Club, was a former member of Entre Nous, Delta Kappa Gamma International, a lifetime member of NEA and ISEA, a member of Stanton Community Library Board, Covenant Women's ministries, and Alliance Women. Delma loved babies, and was instrumental in organizing the Cradle Roll at the Evangelical Covenant Church, and volunteered in the nursery for MOPS at Faith Community Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, and took numerous bus tours to see other places in the U.S. Delma particularly enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren, and attended all graduations and weddings until her health prevented her from traveling. At the Stanton Care Center, she kept notebooks with pictures of each family, their children and grandchildren. Delma was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Donald, husband Virgil, brothers Wayne and Myron, sister Myrtle, sister-in-law Mildred, brother-in-law George Gillespie, and son-in-law Fred Andringa. Delma is survived by her children and spouses: Richard Sundberg of Stanton, IA, Virginia Eisele of Chicago, IL, Wayne David (Trudy) Sundberg of Albuquerque, NM, Marilyn Andringa of Sheldon, IA, Karen Sundberg of Red Oak, IA, Rebecca Sundberg of Albuquerque, NM, and Leonard Eisele of Kalamazoo, MI; 8 grandchildren: Donald (Stacey) Sundberg of Villisca, IA, Duane Sundberg of Stanton, IA, Lynne Sundberg of Des Moines, IA, Dr. Heather Eisele (Carl Hertz) of Chicago, IL, Leonard (Stephanie) Eisele of DeKalb, IL, Christopher Sundberg of Los Angeles, CA, Dr. Eric (Sabrina) Sundberg of Pasadena, CA and Christopher Andringa of Ames, IA; 8 great-grandchildren: Camden Sundberg, Kegan Sundberg, Blaine Sundberg, Magnus Eisele-Hertz, Rowan Eisele-Hertz, Adriana Eisele, Penelope Eisele, Katarina Leon-Sundberg; and sister-in-law Regina Welsch of Red Oak, IA; other relatives and friends.
