Donald A. ""Pete"" Peterson, age 81 of Stanton, Iowa Donald A. ""Pete"" Peterson, the son Carl Victor and Honorine Anderson Peterson was born November 20, 1926 in Villisca, Iowa. Pete passed from this life on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 20 days. ""Pete"" as he was known by his friends, was a lifelong member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa, and graduated from Stanton High School in May of 1944. He entered the U.S. Navy on November 7, 1944, doing his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He served two years being honorably discharged on August 24, l946. On June 27, 1950 Donald was united in marriage to Janis Esther Roll, in the chapel at Mamrelund Lutheran Church. They had two sons, Scott Richard and Stuart Carl. Don began to work for the Nyman Electric Cooperative R.E.A. in 1950, first as a lineman and then as Power Use Advisor. In that capacity, he helped many Nyman Electric customers plan electrical systems for farms and homes for over 38 years, before retiring in l989. Pete loved baseball, both as a player and as a fan. He played on the Stanton Vikings Town Team for many years following World War II. He was also heavily involved in the organization of the annual ""Baseball Day"" sponsored by the American Legion Ernie Johnson Post #406 in the l960's and l970's. Don and Janis traveled extensively all their married lives, making several camping trips throughout the United States while the boys were young, and later to Canada and Europe. His passion for the history of Stanton's Swedish heritage manifested itself in the development of the Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center which in housed in Stanton's original high school building built in l885. He was active as a volunteer in many of Stanton's civic organizations including American Legion Ernie Johnson Post #406 for 60 years, Stanton Fire Department, Stanton Housing Commission for 40 years, Stanton Town Council for 12 years, Boy Scouts of America Troop #76 Scoutmaster for 8 years, Stanton Centennial Chair in l970, Stanton Industrial Foundation, Southwest Iowa Tourism and the Stanton Historical Society since 1971. He was also involved as Committee Chair of the Cemetery Board of Mamrelund Lutheran Church. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and wife: Janis on December 3, 2006. Pete is survived by his sons and their spouses: Scott and Jane Peterson of Yakima, WA and Stuart and Laurie Peterson of Stanton, IA; four grandchildren: Kristina Peterson of Snohomish, WA; Karl Peterson of Seattle, WA; Kate Peterson of Decorah, IA; Neil Peterson of Stanton, IA; brothers: Stanley Peterson and wife Janice of Stanton, IA; Dale Peterson and wife Jeanette of Ledyard, CT; Norman Peterson of Stanton, IA; Carl Vincent Peterson of Placentia, CA; sister: JoAnn English and husband Joseph of Burnsville, MN; nieces, nephews and other relatives along with a host of friends. ""PETE"" Peterson will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, IA Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli, officiating Burial of cremated remains in Mamre Cemetery on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center in Stanton. Memorials can be made to the Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center, Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, and American Cancer Society on behalf of Donald A.
