Obituary

Donald Burdette Rodgers, the son of William B. and Maude Murdock Rodgers was born October 16, 1922 at Fairfield, Iowa. He died on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Red Oak Rehab & Care Center, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 20 days.

Donald was raised in Fairfield, Iowa. He graduated from Fairfield High School in l941. Following graduation, he began working for Spurgeon's Mercantile Company in Ames, Iowa. Donald was united in marriage to Virginia K. Carroll on September 7, 1942 in Lancaster, Missouri. Donald entered the U.S. Army Air Force on October 17, 1942, serving during WW II. He was honorably discharged on February 20, 1946. After his military service, Don and Virginia moved to Dixon, Illinois where he again, worked for Spurgeon's. While living in Dixon, they were blessed with their children Greg and Debra. In 1955, the family moved to Red Oak when Don was named manager of the Spurgeon's store in Red Oak. His career with Spurgeon's company totaled 18 years. In 1964, Don then began his career in banking with Houghton State Bank. He worked for Houghton State Bank at the Elliott location, retiring after 20 years. While in the bank, he was involved with many activities in support of Elliott. He played an instrumental part of the development and building of the Griswold Golf and Country Club. Don was a people person, he enjoyed being with family and friends playing cards, golfing and watching football. He loved dancing, especially with Virginia. During his retirement years, Don was active with the Red Oak Senior Center by delivering meals and assisting with fundraisers. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Lorraine Post #67, Red Oak Lions Club along with serving many years on the Montgomery County Fair Board.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Virginia Rodgers on March 22, 2000.

Donald is survived by two children: Greg Rodgers and wife Linda of Red Oak, IA; and Debra Boardman and husband Russ of Valley, NE; five grandchildren: Chad Rodgers and wife Val of Griswold, IA; Jeff Rodgers and wife Jennifer of Kansas City, MO; Nicole Rodgers of Denver, CO; Jason Boardman and wife Dana of Omaha, NE; Amanda Boardman of Valley, NE; five great-grandchildren: Logan and Mattingly Rodgers; Emma and Eden Boardman; Gage Boardman; brother, H. Lynn Rodgers of Fairfield, IA; sister, Jeanine Rodgers Paul of Marietta, IL; other relatives and a host of friends.
