Donald Marion Smith, the son of Marion J. and Nora McGee Smith was born October 25, 1927 in Henderson, Iowa. He died on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 26 days. Don was raised and attended school in Henderson, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Army, serving during WW II. When Don returned from the Army, he farmed with his father in the Henderson area. Don was united in marriage to Wanda Nichols and to this union a son, Mick was born. He later married Opal Peck and to this union a son, Lloyd was born. Don later farmed south of Stanton, Iowa and in 1964, made his home in Stanton. On December 25, 1967, Don was united in marriage to Laurel E. Brown Elwood in Stanton, Iowa. While in Stanton, Don worked as a butcher for Schenck Grocery. He then served the community of Stanton as their police officer for 21 years. Don also drove a school bus for the Stanton Community Schools for 27 years. Don loved to play cards, mainly pitch with his friends. He enjoyed reading Westerns, playing Free Cell on the computer, watching wrestling on TV, passing out candy on Halloween and his steak and onion rings at Viking Lake. Most of all, he loved his family and all the times when they would gather together. Don was a past member of the Christian Church in Henderson, IA. Don served many years as a Stanton volunteer fireman and was a member of the American Legion Ernie Johnson Post #406 of Stanton. Don was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Charles Smith; and great-granddaughter: Madeline Smith. Don is survived by his wife: Laurel Smith of Stanton, IA; sons and their wives: Mick Sheryl Smith of Palermo, ME; Lloyd Vicki Smith of Elliott, IA; Rusty Janet Elwood of Villisca, IA; Kent Dena Elwood of Red Oak, IA; Tom Christi Elwood of Stanton, IA; daughters and their husbands: Jackie Donald Grassia of McCook, NE; Susan Kirk McConnell of Nixa, MO; 26 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sisters: Ruby Godfrey and husband Don of Emerson, IA; Mrs. Mamie Forward of Red Oak, IA; other relatives and friends.
