Obituary

Donovan Vaughn Lewis, the son of Seth and Violet E. (Anderson) Lewis was born June 30, 1934 in Montgomery County, Iowa near Wales. He passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 28 days. Donovan was raised in the Wales area and graduated in 1951 from Wales High School. He then served his country in the Iowa Army National Guard. On June 4, 1960, Donovan was united in marriage to Shirley Joan Crouse at Wales, Iowa and to this union they were blessed with two sons. Donovan farmed and raised livestock his entire life. He served as a 4-H leader for 14 years and enjoyed bowling, even having the high score for league one year. He also enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. Donovan and Shirley lived on the same farm for 43 years, which has been in the family since 1891. Donovan was a member of the Center Ridge Presbyterian Church, and Masonic Lodge #162 A.F & A.M. in Red Oak and Masonic Cass Lodge #412 in Griswold. He also served on the Montgomery County Fair Board for many years. In 2003, Donovan and Shirley moved into Red Oak. Following Donovan's retirement from the farm, he put his carpenter skills to use by helping others and building homes with Habitat for Humanity. Donovan loved his family dearly and was a kind, gentle and generous man. Donovan was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Shirley on October 9, 2010. Donovan is survived by sons: Robert Lewis and Dianne Fritz of Tabor, IA and Thomas Lewis of Red Oak, IA; granddaughters: Courtney Hamilton, Ashley Lewis and McKenna Lewis; brother, David (Janet) Lewis of Stanton, IA; special friend, Marjorie Greenfield of Red Oak, IA; brothers-in-law: Richard (Lucille) Crouse of Nodaway, IA and Warren (Deb) Crouse of Red Oak, IA; sisters-in-law: Karen Sundberg of Red Oak, IA and Judi Crouse of Council Buffs, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Center Ridge Cemetery Rev. J. Keith Cook, Officiating Masonic Service will be held on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home A memorial is being established in Donovan's name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
