Doris Maree Finchem, the daughter of Delbert and Doris Walker Artlip was born September 11, 1921 in Bethune, Colorado. She died on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Red Oak Rehab & Care Center, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 20 days. Maree's younger years were lived in Colorado and later Elliott, Iowa. She attended high school and graduated from Elliott High School. Following graduation, Maree lived in the states of Washington and later California. On April 12, 1951 Maree was united in marriage to Mern Finchem in Harrison, Arkansas. They made their home in Elliott where they operated the M & M Sundry for a few years. Maree decided to attend college in Clarinda, Iowa at Iowa Western Community College and obtained her Associates Degree. She then attended Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska, earning her BS degree in education. She taught 5th grade in Carson, Iowa for a few years before moving to Red Oak. While making Red Oak her home, and over the years Maree had worked for Gold Crown Restaurant, Powell School, Eveready Battery Company and managed the Senior Citizens' Meal Site. When Maree was 70 years old she began in-home child care and for 15 years took care of children. Maree moved to Colorado in 2007 to be closer to her son. She returned to Red Oak in 2009 and became a resident of Red Oak Rehab & Care Center. Maree was an active member of the Red Oak Church of the Nazarene where she had served as treasurer, Sunday school teacher and worked on various committees. Maree was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mern, two grandsons: Brandon and Randy Latus; 2 brothers: Dean and Robert Artlip; and sister Faye Artlip. Maree is survived by two children: Richard Finchem of Braddyville, IA; and Linda Davies of Columbus, GA; two grandchildren: Robert Latus and Laynette Moses; two great-grandchildren: Chelsea Moses and Javan Davenport; brother Charles Artlip of Villisca, IA; and sisters: Edith Allen of Red Oak, IA; and Betty Lawson of Torrance, CA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Iowa Pastor Brian Anderson, Officiating Family and friends may meet at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home at 10:15 for procession to the cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Church of Nazarene Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
