Obituary

Dorothy S. Downey, the daughter of Harvey and Ina Baird Selser was born January 24, 1918 in Wetonka, South Dakota. She died on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Griswold Care Center, Griswold, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 15 days. Dorothy along with her parents and siblings moved to Red Oak, Iowa from South Dakota when Dorothy was a youth. She graduated from Red Oak High School. Dorothy was united in marriage to Lisle H. Downey on January 21, 1936 at the Baird home in Pilot Grove Township of Montgomery County, IA. Lisle and Dorothy farmed in the Pilot Grove area, where they made their home on the same farm for 53 years. Dorothy continued to live on their farm even after Lisle's passing on January 29, 1989. Dorothy and Lisle enjoyed many winters in Arizona, with her spending a total of 22 winters there. Dorothy was a member of the Pilot Grove United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star #95, and the O.N.O. Club. Dorothy enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and genealogy. From 1990 until 2003, while wintering in Arizona, Dorothy volunteered at Mesa Lutheran Hospital, Mesa. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Lisle; brother: Harold; and sister: Lucille. Dorothy is survived by her daughter: Sharon Olander and husband Merrill of Elliott, IA; grandsons: Jon Olander and wife Ruth of Lake Villa, IL; and Greg Olander and wife Mary Beth of West Des Moines, IA; great-grandchildren: Ellie, Marie, Laura, David, Jenna and Jessica; other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Graveside Service will be held Friday, September 12, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, IA Rev. Terry McClain, Officiating Family and friends will meet at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery. Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Thursday, September 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Family requests memorials to the Elliott Public Library in lieu of flowers. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
