Dorothy Louise Elwood, the daughter of Lawrence and Millicent Hart Nelson was born August 22, 1935 in Braddyville, Iowa. She died on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 72 years and 1 month. Dorothy was raised and attended school in Page County, Iowa until the age of 16. In 1951, the family moved to Elliott, Iowa. Dorothy graduated from Elliott High School in l953. From 1952 until 1955, she worked at the Elliott Telephone Office. Dorothy was united in marriage to Joseph T. Elwood Jr. on April 15, 1955 in Glenwood, Iowa. They made their home in Elliott where they raised their 2 daughters. Dorothy served as a 4-H leader when their daughters were young. Dorothy attended Elliott Church of Christ. Dorothy loved to travel. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her husband on his semi-truck. From 1986 until 1998, Dorothy worked at Vista Gardens Care Center in Red Oak. She treasured time with family and friends playing cards and making trips to the casino. She enjoyed making hand yarn craft items to share with many. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Cecil Nelson; brother-in-law, Melvin Whitehouse; and sister-in-law, Roberta Nelson. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Joseph T. Elwood Jr. of Elliott, IA; two daughters: Pamela Sickels of Red Oak, IA; Debra Oliver and husband Randy of Stanton, IA; 5 grandchildren: Brandi Dorscher, Travis Sickels, Crystal Hoose, Chelsea Griffeth and Dylan Griffeth; several great-grandchildren; brothers: Russell Nelson and wife Dorothy of Elliott, IA; Leroy Nelson of Fontanelle, IA; Norman Nelson and wife Claire of Big Bear, CA; sisters: Kathryn Whitehouse of Lady Lake, FL; and Janet Hunt of Elliott, IA; sister-in-law, Annie Nelson of Des Moines, IA; numerous nephews, nieces, along with other relatives and friends.
