Dorothy Mae Gammell, the daughter of Paul and Blanche Scherer Betts was born September 18, 1930 at their home in Cromwell, Iowa. She died on Friday, November 27, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 9 days. Dorothy was born at Cromwell, Iowa, the family then moved to Red Oak. She attended the Red Oak School system. She worked as a waitress in several restaurants in Red Oak. She was united in marriage to Earl Ray Gammell on December 30, 1949 at Red Oak. They lived in Red Oak where Dorothy worked at the Union Carbide Company until they moved to Elliott in l955. She then worked at Gord's Grocery, Elliott Café, again at Union Carbide and then as a cook assistant for the Elliott Elementary School before retiring in l987. Dorothy loved to roller skate and taught all four of her children, seven grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren to skate before a concussion at age 65, made her retire her skates. The most important thing she taught her children was to love unconditionally and to know Jesus as their Lord. Dorothy was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a past member of the O.N.O. Club and was awarded the Aksarben Good Neighbor award in May of 1982. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Dorothy loved to attend all the school and sport activities of her extended family. Her most favorite times were when her family was around her at home. In 2008, Dorothy and Earl were honored by the town they called home for over 52 years, as the Grand Marshals of the Elliott Fall Festival celebration. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: James Betts and Melvin Betts; sister, Velma Means; granddaughter, and Tiffany Gammell in infancy. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 59 years, Earl Gammell of Red Oak, IA; daughters: Sue Ann Ridlen and husband Ed of Washington, IA; and Teresa Petty and husband John of Red Oak, IA; sons: David Gammell and wife Debbie of Elliott, IA; and Donald Gammell and wife Dee of Atlantic, IA; grandchildren: Christine Cerda of Red Oak, IA; Pastor Doug Petty and wife Jessica of Vernal, UT; Jennifer Lee and husband Jason of Ames, IA; Kate Ehresman and husband Mark of Huxley, IA; Mitchell Hotze of Council Bluffs, IA; Terry Gammell and wife Amanda of Waconia, MN; and Tisha Keller and husband Adam of Waterloo, IA; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Ailene Coates and husband Merrill of Red Oak, IA; brother, Bob Betts of Red Oak, IA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
