Obituary

Dorothy Marie Veak, the daughter of Harry L. and Elsa M. Honett Quist was born April 15, 1924 in Montgomery County, IA. She passed away on Friday, November 19, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, IA at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 4 days. Dorothy grew up in the Stanton area and in 1941, graduated from Stanton High School. In January of 1942, she enrolled in Van Sant Business School in Omaha, NE. In April of 1943, Dorothy went to work for the War Department in Washington, D.C. After working two and a half years at the Pentagon, the war ended. She then went to Nuremberg, Germany to serve as a stenographer for the War Crimes Trials. Dorothy was united in marriage to Dallas R. Veak on February 14, 1951 in Boone, IA. They farmed in the Wallin, IA area for 18 years, and then in 1975, made their home in Red Oak. Dorothy worked in the admitting office of the Murphy Memorial Hospital from l975 until her retirement in l989. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir. She also volunteered as a driver for Meals On Wheels. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, traveling and bird watching. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dallas on July 15, l993; two sons: Jon and Dean; and two brothers: Wayne and Donovan Quist. Dorothy is survived by her two daughters: Cheryl Young and husband Steve of Bettendorf, IA; and Shirley Grinstead of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Ryan Scott, Lindsey Scott, Molly Williams and husband Gary, and Calvin Erickson; two great-grandchildren: Ethan and Felicia; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Monday, November 22, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Red Oak Rev. Dr. George Hooper, Officiating Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
