Obituary

Dorothy Harris McGreer White, a longtime resident of Montgomery County, IA passed away peacefully with family members at her side on December 1, 2011, at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 20 days, at an assisted living center in Overland Park, KS, where she was a resident for more than three years. Dorothy was born to J. M. and Stella Harris McGreer on March 11, 1913 on the family farm near Coburg, IA. She attended Coburg school graduating in l930 and continued her education at Red Oak Junior College and then Simpson College. Dorothy was a school teacher and taught country school in Garfield Township, near the home of her future husband. Dorothy married Clarence A. White on January 1, 1935 in Red Oak, IA. They together lived on the family farm near Emerson, IA for 46 years where they farmed and raised their four daughters. Dorothy and Clarence enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Texas and Arizona. Dorothy moved into Red Oak in l985 and to Overland Park in 2008. Dorothy was a member of the Hawthorne Methodist Church and served as pianist and organist for many years. She was active in the women's society, and loved to help with quilting and putting on programs. She was a past member of the Red Oak Monday Club, Order of Eastern Star of Emerson, a Bible Study Group, and music groups in Red Oak. She was a past 4-H leader, enjoying every minute spent helping her daughters with 4-H projects. Dorothy loved traveling and spending "girl time" on her many trips to fun destinations with her four daughters. She had many talents: music from the time she was young, painting, and writing poetry. Dorothy's way of life was a tremendous legacy which she has now passed on to her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence White on November 14, 1981; grandson, Alan Schnitker; infant great-grandson, Daniel Shoemaker, and brother, William "Billy" McGreer. Dorothy is survived by her four daughters: Marjorie Groom of Raytown, MO; Marcia Schnitker of St. Joseph, MO; Cheryl Shoemaker and husband Jim of Overland Park, KS; and Connie Hilding of Ralston, NE; 10 grandchildren: Steve Groom of Raytown, MO; Karen Nelson and husband Scott of Brentwood, TN; Kathy Topping and husband Roger of San Antonio, TX; Susan Burch and husband Chris of Lynchburg, VA; Gary Schnitker and wife Lucinda of McKinney, TX; Kevin Shoemaker and wife Lori of Chesterfield, MO; Kristine Luthi and husband Scott of Olathe, KS; Kari Burgess and husband Matthew of Overland Park, KS; Matt Hilding and wife Michelle of Omaha, NE; and Michelle Renzi and husband Joe of Overland Park, KS; 23 great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and many friends. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak Burial in Salem Cemetery, southwest of Red Oak Rev. Terry McClain, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Memorials may be directed to Hawthorne Methodist Church.
