Obituary

Earl Ray Gammell age 92 of Acorn Acres in Red Oak, formerly of Elliott, Iowa passed away on Friday, January 21, 2021.

Earl Ray Gammell was born on the family farm on June 25, 1928 to Don and Leota (Mercer) Gammell. He passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at his home in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 27 days.

The family lived in the Stennett and Elliott communities. Earl graduated from the Stennett School in 1946. After graduation, Earl worked putting in the telephone lines from Griswold to Red Oak. He then became a truck driver for Russell Halvin Trucking in Red Oak. He married Dorothy Mae Betts at Red Oak on December 30th, 1949. They lived in Red Oak until 1955 when they moved to Elliott after he became a partner in the Baker and Gammell Trucking. In 1960 he worked for Central Construction and then for Mace and Hahn Implement in Red Oak as a parts man. In the 1970's he became the Transportation Director for the Griswold Community School System until he retired in 1990.

Earl and Dorothy had 4 children, Sue Ann, Teresa, David and Donald. Earl's favorite vacation spot was the Iowa State Fair. It was the first trip he and Dorothy took together, and they camped out at almost every fair. Earl loved horses and at one time had his own pony pulling team of Jerry and Pete. He loved to attend the sport events and other school activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church. In 2008 Earl and Dorothy were honored by the town they called home for over 52 years as the Grand Marshals of the Elliott Fall Festival celebration. Dorothy passed away in November of 2009. On June 17, 2010 Earl married Nonie (Wynonia) Miller who passed away November 22, 2014.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy his wife of 59 years in 2009, 2nd wife Nonie in 2014, son Donald Gammell and a granddaughter Tiffany Gammell in infancy.

Earl is survived by daughters, Sue Ann (Ed) Ridlen of Ames, IA , Teresa (John) Petty of Red Oak and son Dave (Debbie) Gammell of Elliott. Grandchildren Christine Cerda (fiancé Shane James) of Ute, IA; Pastor Doug (Jessica) Petty of Long Pine, NE; Jennifer (Jason) Lee of Ames, IA; Kate (Mark) Ehresman of Huxley, IA; Mitchell Hotze of Carson, IA; Terry (Amanda) Gammell of Waconia, MN; Tisha (Adam) Keller of Waterloo, IA ; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; sisters Dorothy (Wendell) Kelley of Hastings, IA; Ruth (Lin) Cates of Houston, TX, sister-in-law Ailene Coates of Red Oak, brother-in-law Bob Betts of Red Oak, daughter-in-law Dee Gammell of Atlantic, IA and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral Service will be held.
