Obituary

Edna Emma Marie Newman, the daughter of Otto H. and Clara Sievers Niemann was born January 23, 1915 in Winside, Nebraska. She passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the home of her daughter, Garnet Kirk Requist in Stanton, Iowa at the age of 97 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Edna was baptized and confirmed at the Theophilus Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winside, NE. After graduating from high school, she attended Wayne State College at Wayne, NE, took classes in Home Economics and Ancient History. While in college, she worked at the student supply store. Edna was united in marriage to Garfield A. Newman on February 7, 1937 in Winside, NE. They moved to the family farm near Essex, IA in March of 1937. In 1946, Edna and Garfield made their home on their farm northeast of Stanton, IA. Edna worked 5 years for the W.F. Woolworth Store, and then Stanton School District for 20 years as the manager of their lunch program, she retired in 1980. While working for the Stanton School, she continued her education with Iowa State University in Home Economics. She was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church and enjoyed going to W.E.L.C.A. meetings and their work days. Edna was a member of the 20th Century Club, Garden Club and Neighborhood Club. Her family was her life, she loved baking cookies, reading nursery rhymes and stories with the children. Edna and Garfield shared their gift of hosting with family and friends by having their doors open and ready to entertain, which they also, passed on to their children. Edna was the 'go-to' person for spelling, she loved to read, and everyone enjoyed receiving her beautifully handwritten letters. Edna was happy to live in her own home until the age of 93. At that time she moved to Garnet and Kirk Requist's home.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Garfield on November 18, 1989; great-grandson, Cody Gilliland in l989; brother, Alvin and sister, Norma Ferrier.

Edna is survived by her three children: Ron Newman and wife Millie; Garnet Requist and husband Kirk; and John Newman and wife Julie all of Stanton, IA; nine grandchildren: Wendy Ken Confer of Stanton, IA; Mindy Jake Wookey of Red Oak, IA; Heidi Brad Bader of Cedar Rapids, IA; Lori Requist of Des Moines, IA; Judson Gloria Requist of Stanton, IA; Klint Requist of Ankeny, IA; Ingrid Matt Perkins of Emerson, IA; Andrew Allison Newman and Kyle Newman of Des Moines, IA; fourteen great-grandchildren: Cassie Gilliland fiancé Carlos Williams; Cade and Marcel Confer; Madison, Mallorie and Jonan Wookey; Joshua and Carson Bader; Jeremy Amy Tibben and Tami Tibben; Isabelle, Mason and Johnathan Perkins; and Tyler Newman; five great-great grandchildren: Cailex and Cylin Williams; Alexis, Kami and Kywin Tibben; special friend, Beth Leib of Des Moines, IA; four sisters: Lisette Wells and Esther McMahon of Lebanon, OR; Marian Jess Truby of Lincoln, NE; Verda Parr of Omaha, NE; and brother, Les June Niemann of Lebanon, OR; nieces, nephews, cousins, along with other relatives and friends.

Burial at Mamre Cemetery, Stanton, IA

Visitation with the family present at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Stanton Fire & Rescue or Stanton Child Resource Center.
