Elizabeth Lucille Flaten, the daughter of Raymond and Cleo (Berry) Briggs was born December 25, 1928, at Red Oak, Iowa. She passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015, at the North Shore Manor, Loveland, Colorado, at the age of 86 years, 9 months, and 29 days. Elizabeth, Betty to family and friends, was raised in Red Oak and attended Red Oak High School. She was united in marriage to Maurice L. Flaten on March 30, 1947 at Atchison, Kansas. In 1948, they moved to Minnesota, while Maurice worked at Faribault and Owatonna. Betty and Maurice returned to Red Oak in l981. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her family. Betty was a life time member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Minnesota and a member of the Red Oak Eagles Lodge Auxiliary. She loved doing volunteer projects with both of these organizations and gave freely of her time and talents as a leader with the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts when her children were involved in those activities. She loved to sew, crochet, bake, and cook, and used her heart and hands in service to others throughout her whole life. Being married to a Norwegian, Betty learned to make wonderful Scandinavian delicacies and was known for her lefse, rosettes, krumkake, and sandbakkels, as well as her homemade bread. She then passed on to her daughters and granddaughters her love of cooking and baking. She moved to Loveland, Colorado, in 2012 to be closer to her children. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice on January 2, 2011; four brothers; two sisters; and two sons-in-law: Gordon Carlson and Richard Dailey. Elizabeth is survived by three children: Linda Carlson and companion Marlin Hanson of Bergland, MI; Becky Dailey of Loveland, CO; and Thomas Flaten and wife Glenda of Loveland, CO; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Doris Shaver and June Briggs both of Red Oak, IA; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa A memorial is being established in Elizabeth's name.
