Elizabeth E. Guffey, the daughter of William A. and Anna Laura Ford Guffey, was born October 24, 1917 in Wayne County, Kentucky. She passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at her home in Red Oak, Iowa after an extended illness at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 25 days. At the age of four, Elizabeth moved from Kentucky with her parents and siblings to Page County, Iowa. She graduated from Red Oak High School in l937. Elizabeth continued her education at Red Oak Junior College, earning her teacher's certificate. In 1939, she accepted her first teaching position at Pittsburg Country School. While teaching, she worked towards her degree. In 1951, she received her degree from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas. Throughout Elizabeth's career, she taught students at Pittsburg Country School, Elliott, Wales and Red Oak. She taught for a total of 46 years, retiring in l985. Elizabeth's many hobbies included woodworking, growing vegetables and tending her flower gardens. She also enjoyed cooking and camping with her church kids. Elizabeth had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Red Oak since l941. She had held almost all offices in church leadership, participated in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma and Retired School Personnel. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Ray Guffey and James B. Jack Guffey; an infant sister and brother; brother-in-law, Robert Heckert; and sisters-in-law: Rozella Guffey and Betty Guffey. Elizabeth is survived by her dear sisters: Mary Guffey of Red Oak, IA and Mrs. Martha Heckert of Red Oak, IA; nephews: Jim Guffey; Ray Guffey and wife Sue; and Rodney Guffey and wife Lois; nieces: Dora McCullough and husband Myrle; Ruth Blackmore and husband Jerry; Janell Rankin and husband Richard; 13 great-nieces and nephews; 17 great-great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Monday, September 22, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Red Oak Burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Nyman at 1:30 p.m. Rev.
