Emma Cleone Olivette Lungren Nelson was born on October 2, 1918 in Montgomery County to Carl Magnus "Ruben" Lungren and Annis Louise Nelson Lungren. She died on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 5 months and 6 days.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Fremont Lutheran Church in Nyman. Cleone attended 8 years of country school and 4 years of high school in Red Oak, Iowa where she graduated as the valedictorian of her class. After high school Cleone pursued Normal training to be an elementary teacher. She attended the Red Oak Junior College for one year and a summer school at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. She taught public school for eight years; five years were in one room school houses, Mount Hope, Kramer and Grant Center, and three years in Stanton, 5th and 6th grade.
September 1, 1944, Cleone married Orville Herbert Shorty Nelson of Stanton, Iowa. The wedding took place in Omaha, Nebraska, when Orville was home on a long weekend furlough from the army. When Orville returned from the service in the spring of 1946, they took up farming on the Dahlquist farm, east of Stanton. In 1958, they bought the Nelson home place where Cleone lived until age 85, when she moved to the Stanton Care Center. She loved the farm life and worked hard gardening, canning, and taking care of the home and her family.
Cleone was active in the Stanton community. She was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church, a Sunday school teacher for over 25 years, Bible school teacher, a Luther League counselor, and a member of many Bible study groups. Cleone belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for 57 years serving in many offices, attending conferences, helping to organize the food concession stand for Baseball day, selling poppies, and helping with the annual slum feed. She was a member of the local Entre Nous Between Us club that focused on a variety of public service and literary activities. This club was responsible for the planning and organizing of the first Santa Lucia Festival in Stanton and Cleone was on the committee. Birthday Club and Worthwhile club were also a special part of her life as well as the many "seven couple" get-togethers. Cleone loved her family and liked to make a meal and all sit around the table. She had an amazing gift for remembering family ties and liked genealogy. In later years she enjoyed numerous special trips with her husband and also with her lifelong friends Florence Green Hoffman and Ruth Ann Ericson.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 43 years, Orville, who died in 1987, her brother Virgil Lungren and sister Phyllis Veseen.
Cleone is survived by three sons and a daughter: Bruce Nelson and wife Marla, Stanton, Iowa; Chris Nelson and wife Barbara, Stanton, Iowa; Fred Nelson and wife Sandie, Des Moines, Iowa; Annis Jane Nelson Williams and husband Mark, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
