Fern Broker, the daughter of Burt and Gertrude (Raffety) Henry was born August 3, 1915 at Drexel, Missouri. She passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 100 years, 1 month and 12 days. Fern was raised on a farm near Drexel, Missouri and graduated from Drexel High School. In December 23, 1934, Fern was united in marriage to Robert A. Broker at Carthage, Missouri. They made their home in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to California during WW II. After the war, Fern and Robert moved back to Kansas City. She was a stay at home mother spending important time with her children. After the kids left home, Fern worked many years in retail sales for Macy's Department Store. In 1996, and several years after the passing of Robert, Fern moved to Red Oak. She was an excellent housekeeper and enjoyed taking care of her home. Her gift of hospitality was shared with family and friends as she loved to entertain. She also enjoyed going on shopping trips, playing games and cards. Fern was a member of the First United Methodist Church and P.E.O. Chapter HB, both of Red Oak. Above all, she loved her family dearly. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert on October 30, 1994; daughter, Lorna Gail Bjornes; brother, Roy and sister, Dorothy. Fern is survived by her son, Roy A. Broker and wife Janet of Des Moines, IA; daughter, Janice Arthur and husband William of Red Oak, IA; four grandchildren: Kimberly (Randy) Dryer of Pleasant Hill, IA; Kay (Doug) Thomson of Pleasant Hill, IA; Jeff (Michele) Arthur of Chesapeake, VA; and Lori (Don) Pinkerton of Omaha, NE; seven great-grandchildren: Kyle Thomson, Adam Elsinga, Katie Dryer, Steven and Sara Arthur, Nicholas and Samuel Pinkerton; and brother-in-law, Wallace Broker of Apache Junction, AZ; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Caryn Pedersen, Officiating Burial will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Sharon Cemetery, Drexel, Missouri Family requests memorials to the Montgomery County Family YMCA or Wilson Performing Arts Center in Red Oak.
