Obituary

Gary Lee Biggs, the son of Lyle D. and Wanda (Fulton) Biggs was born October 27, 1946 in Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Red Oak Healthcare Community, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 11 days. Gary was raised and attended school in Red Oak, where he played football for the Red Oak Tigers, graduating from Red Oak High School in 1964. Following graduation, he attended Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda. He lived his entire life in southwest Iowa, most of which was spent in Red Oak. After college, Gary worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation as a concrete inspector. Upon returning to Red Oak, Gary worked for a time at Star Agri, and then began a more than 40 year career as an artificer/machinist at Red Oak Machine. He also taught classes for machinists at Southwestern Community College. Gary liked hunting and went on several hunting trips to Wyoming with his father and family friends, Bill McAlpin and Butch Belt. Gary was united in marriage to Phyllis Grinstead on July 19, 2003 in Red Oak, Iowa. Gary was a 38 year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Red Oak Aerie #2715. He held every office with the local Aerie and was a four-time past president and a 10-year secretary. Gary also served twice as district chairman for West Pottawattamie District and Iowa Western Zone chairman. An avid ritualist, he was Worthy President on the local ritual team, Junior Past Worthy President on the Memorial Team and Worthy President on the Installation Team. He also competed and judged ritual at state competition. In 2012, Gary was named to the Iowa State Eagles Ritual Hall of Fame. Gary also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was part of the Eagles Charity Riders during the 1980's. He loved to cook and spent a lot of time cooking at the Eagles. He especially enjoyed carving watermelon, pumpkins and making unusual food figurines for weddings or Hawaiian luau nights. Gary was a coach for the Eagles Jr. Drill team for more than 20 years and known by the drill kids as Pappa Puff. While in school, he was a member of Demolay and later joined Red Oak Masonic Lodge #162 A.F. & A. M. where he had served as Worshipful Master. Gary was preceded in death by his parents. Gary is survived by his wife, Phyllis Biggs of Red Oak, IA; three children: Russ (Karen) Biggs of Carson, IA, Kasey Biggs of Roseburg, OR, and Heather (Darrin) Fisher of rural Villisca, IA; step-children: Mike (Jodi) Fort of Essex, IA, Susan (Bryan) Doll of Damascus, OR, and Jessica Triplett of Red Oak, IA; 17 grandchildren: Kyle Biggs and Lisney Cardenas of Oakland, IA, Katelyn Biggs of Vermillion, SD, Dylan Sanders of Carson, IA, Allison Petty of Elliott, IA, Dylan Gustafson of Shenandoah, IA, Colin Biggs and Cassandra Biggs of Roseburg, OR, Karlee Fisher, Briar Fisher and Jolee Fisher all of Villisca, IA, Mikayla Fort and Aprill Fort of Stanton, IA, Jasmine Fort and Gabe Fort of Essex, IA, Sara Doll of Damascus, OR, Mylee Echternach and Bella Echternach of Red Oak, IA; a great-grandson, Blake Biggs of Oakland, IA; great-uncle, Darwin Anderson of Red Oak, IA; brother-in-law, Perry Grinstead of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law, Donna (Max) Austin of Emerson, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many brothers and sisters from the Fraternal Order of Eagles. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Friday, October 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak Rev. Joseph Stapleton, Officiating Visitation and Viewing with family present on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home A memorial is being established in Gary's name.
