Obituary

Gary Roger Maher, the son of Gerald and Dorothy (Howard) Maher was born December 21, 1944, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Accura Healthcare in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 8 days.

Gary lived and farmed his entire life in the Imogene area. He was a graduate of Nishna Valley High School. On June 2, 1967, Gary was united in marriage to Mary Lee Carlson in Imogene. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard. Gary enjoyed playing cards, traveling, working his livestock and spending time at the sale barn. For many years, Gary volunteered his time working the chain gang at football games for Nishna Valley High School. He was a wonderful supporter of his kids sports and activities. Gary and Mary even hosted three foreign exchange students over the years: Annie Ip of Hong Kong, Paolo Erba of Switzerland and "TE" of Thailand. Gary was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Imogene, where he served on the church council. He was a past member of Knights of Columbus.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and half-sister, Geraldine Viner.

Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Maher of Imogene, IA; two children: Tim Maher of Council Bluffs, IA and Ashley Maher and significant other, Bradd Westemeyer of Des Moines, IA; 4 grandchildren: Davin, Sophia, Ben and Agnes; host children: Annie Ip of Hong Kong, Paolo Erba of Switzerland, "TE" of Thailand; and sister, Genene Fienup of Shenandoah, IA; nieces, nephews, other relative and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 7, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

Wake Service at 4:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Imogene, Iowa
