Obituary

Georgia Colleen Sands, the daughter of George Dewey and Georgia Bailey Vanderhoof was born February 2, 1929 in Red Oak, Iowa. She died on May 18, 2011, at her home in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 16 days. Colleen lived her entire life in Red Oak, where she also attended school. She was united in marriage to Wayne L. Sands on January 14, 1948 in Hiawatha, Kansas. Colleen had worked at the popcorn company and Green Parrot, and then for 30 years for Union Carbide Battery Company, retiring in the early 1980's. She loved gardening and growing flowers in her yard. Colleen enjoyed going to flea markets around the area and collected many garden statues for her yard. She also had a large collection of salt dishes and Kewpie Dolls. Colleen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne on February 27, 2008; 5 brothers: George, Robert, Bill, Keith and Darwin; and 3 sisters: Phyllis Lane, Joy Kite and Betty Martinsen. Colleen is survived by her 3 children: Larry Sands of Red Oak, IA, Ricky Sands and wife Lois of Red Oak, IA, Rita Bienhoff and husband Mark of Villisca, IA; 5 granddaughters: Beth Griffeth and husband Tom, Becky Sands, Cathy Bush and special friend Richard Linfor, Dawn Dozier and husband Richie, and Jody Sands all of Red Oak, IA; 3 great-grandchildren: Kya Torres and husband Gilberto, Dakota Bush and Lexiz Moreno all of Red Oak, IA; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Marcus and Anali Torres of Red Oak, IA; sister: Anna Mae Maple of Springfield, MO; brothers: Dewey Vanderhoof and wife Ovella of Marionville, MO, and Allen Vanderhoof and wife Mary of Whitney, TX; nieces, nephews and other relatives, along with a host of friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak Burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Brian Anderson, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Friday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial is being established in Colleen's name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
