Obituary

Gerald Holm, the son of Lars and Madeline Kaufman Holm was born June 23, 1923 near Truesdale, Iowa. He passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 16 days. Jerry was raised near Sioux Rapids, Iowa, until 4th grade, when he moved along with his parents to Rembrandt, Iowa. While in high school Jerry played basketball all four years; he graduated from Rembrandt High in l942. Jerry entered the U. S. Navy in l943 serving during WW II and was honorably discharged in l946. He returned to the Rembrandt area and worked as a farmhand. Jerry was united in marriage to Dolores M. Ryan on February 16, 1952 at Pocahontas, Iowa. In 1952, Jerry also began a 35-year career, managing grain elevators in Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska. In 1973, Jerry and Dolores moved to Red Oak when Jerry went to work for the Farmers Mercantile Co-op. In 1987, Jerry retired and they continued to make their home in Red Oak. Jerry was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan and enjoyed watching the History Channel. His greatest love after his family, was farming. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time and visiting with friends over coffee at Burger King and the Rainbow. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion and V.F.W. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Lewis. Jerry is survived by his wife, Dolores Holm of Red Oak, IA; daughters: Margaret Holm of Des Moines, IA; Jeanette Beckwith and husband Bruce of Ankeny, IA; and Jean Walker and husband Tim of Prairie City, IA; 6 grandchildren: Ryan West and wife Gayla; Renee West; Jerry West; Kasin Beckwith and wife Patti; Neil Young; Brittan Toland and husband Jeremy; 5 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 12, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Red Oak Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Father Ken Gross, Officiating Prayer Service will be held at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. A memorial is being established in Jerry?s name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
