Obituary

Glen Leroy Benskin, the son of Chester and Selma (Anderson) Benskin was born September 14, 1934 in Montgomery County, Iowa, north of Red Oak. He passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Accura Healthcare of Stanton, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 23 days.

Glen was raised on a farm north of Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956 and trained as a radioman. Glen served on the USS Ranger during its maiden year at sea, sailing around South America. He was honorably discharged in 1958. Glen was united in marriage to Betty Vander Hart on February 8, 1959 at Newton, Iowa and they made their home on their farm north of Stanton. Glen farmed until 2004, when he and Betty moved into Stanton. Glen was not only a hard worker, but also believed in volunteering and giving back. Over the years, he served as a board member for the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, Stanton School District, Farmers Co-op and the Montgomery County History Center. He was elected three terms to the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors and served 12 years. Glen was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church, the Masonic Tarkio Lodge #645 A.F & A.M for 50 years, Odd Fellows, Order of Eastern Star, Optimist Clubs of Red Oak and Stanton, and the Double Dozen Club. Glen and Betty enjoyed camping and being a part of the Carefree Campers Club. He especially loved attending his children's and grandchildren's events and sporting activities. Glen was a person who loved to have fun with family and friends.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty on December 13, 2007; son-in-law, Frank Shields and infant brother, Carroll Wayne Benskin.

Glen is survived by his three daughters: Debra Shields of Cape May, NJ; Barb (Randy) Lewellen of Stanton, IA and Cheryl (Daniel) Case of Tenville, IA; 8 grandchildren: Gary (Tiffany) Honeyman, Audra Honeyman, Scott (Torrie) Honeyman, Landon (Shelby) Lewellen, Cameron (Morgan) Lewellen, Nolan Case, Emmett Case and Seth Shields; 7 great-grandchildren: Ava, Gavin and Taya Honeyman, Brayden Honeyman, Bennett and Aniston Honeyman and Lincoln Lewellen, sisters-in-law: Nancy (Jerry) Hacker of Prescott Valley, AZ and Bertha (Ed) Brooks of Melbourne, FL; and brother-in-law, Rich (Rita) Vander Hart of New Berlin, WI; cousins, other relatives and friends.
