Grace Amelia Menke, the daughter of Ira S. and Grace E. Fate Bishop was born October 4, 1909 in Pilot Grove Township of Montgomery County, Iowa. She passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 99 years, 6 months and 11 days. Amelia was raised in the Elliott area, graduating from Elliott High School in l927. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa graduating with an Elementary Education Certificate in l929. She later received her Bachelors' Degree in l937. Amelia's teaching career began in 1929; she taught country school near Elliott for one year, before teaching in Elliott. Later, Amelia moved to Primghar, Iowa and taught there five years. Amelia was united in marriage to Vernon E. Menke on February 24, 1940 in South Sioux City, NE. Following her marriage to Vernon, Amelia concentrated full time on being a wife, mother and homemaker. Vernon and Amelia lived in Oregon for a short time before returning to Elliott in l943, to make their home. Amelia was a member of the Elliott Church of Christ and Iowa Federated Women's Club. Amelia enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, bird watching and sports of all kinds. She moved to Red Oak in l988, after the passing of her husband. Amelia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon on January 16, 1988; daughter, Margaret Reeder and son-in-law, Larry Reeder; three brothers: Elvin, Verne, and Glen; two sisters: Margie Bishop and Agnes Hannifin. Amelia is survived by three daughters: Patricia (Armando) Bonilla of Bogota, Colombia; Jana (Wayne) Singleton of Lincoln, NE; and Linda (David Clark) of Red Oak, IA; 10 grandchildren: Armando (Myriam) Bonilla Jr. of Charlotte, NC; Michael (Ana Maria) Bonilla of Charlotte, NC; Stephen (Andrea) Singleton of Lincoln, NE; Jana Marie Singleton of Dubuque, IA; Mary Singleton of Lincoln, NE; Adam (Jennifer) Clark of Red Oak, IA; Amy (Shane LaMar) Clark of Red Oak, IA; Carrie (Daniel Rensch Jr.) Clark of Red Oak, IA; Jason (Jen) Reeder of Omaha, NE; Jeff (Melissa) Reeder of Bellevue, NE; 12 great-grandchildren: Santiago, Cristina, Catalina, Ian, Macenzi, Alexa, Karley, Trinity, Riley, Madison, Lawrence and Rayven; sister, Charlene Martin of Redmond, WA; sister-in-law, Anne Bishop of St. Charles, IL; nieces and nephews; cousins and friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, IA Rev. Fred Pilecki, Officiating Visitation with the family present at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home one hour prior to the Service on Saturday.
