Obituary

Gregory Alan Smith, the son of George "Pete" and Rose Marie (Halbert) Smith was born on July 1, 1955, in Red Oak Iowa. He passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at his home in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 12 days.

Greg lived his entire life in Red Oak. While in school, he began working with his father at Smith Construction with concrete, laying block, brick and doing flat work. In 1974, Greg graduated from Red Oak High School, and in August of that year, he married Wendy Ingersoll. On July 31, 1981, Greg was united in marriage to Joyce Leeper in Estherville, Iowa. Greg had many hobbies and interests: Harley Davidson motorcycles, cars, camping, boating, guns, music, guitar, trips to the casinos and trips to Texas. On May 13, 2009, Joyce passed away and nearly 10 years later, Greg was united in marriage to Shari Eshelman on January 26, 2019, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Greg was a nature-lover; just sitting under his lean-to was so relaxing for him. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed playing with and encouraging them. Greg was proud of his trade and always worked for quality work to be done, and finished on time. Another generation of Smith Construction has now passed.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joyce.

Greg is survived by his wife, Shari Smith of Red Oak, IA; children: Heather (Rob) Smith of Red Oak, IA, Joe Smith and significant other Mindy Riibe of Red Oak, IA, Lisa Jenkins of Red Oak, IA, Justin Archer and significant other Jennifer Gaunt of Red Oak, IA, Kyle Archer of Atlantic, IA and Ember (Danny) Adams of Stanton, IA; 15 grandchildren: Chloey (Curt) Ritzman, Olivia Jenkins, Ashley Valentine, Ashley (Eric) Soat, Stefani Smith and significant other Ryan Marshall, Kiley Riibe, Kadyn Riibe, Dezi Archer, Mackenzie Archer, Jayden Archer, Christian Askey, Mara Adams, Waehk Adams and Konner Dale; 5 great-grandchildren: Berton Smith, Bearett Marshall, Aria Soat, Brinklee Marshall and Baylor Chapple; and sister, Pam (John) Herzog of Red Oak, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
