Harry Sargent Veon, Jr., the son of Harry S. and Lola (Pierce) Veon, Sr. was born August 30, 1923 at Ashland, Nebraska. He passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 15 days. Harry was raised in Ashland Nebraska. His parents passed away when he was very young, so Harry was raised by his Aunt Cora Barnes. He graduated from Ashland High School in l942. Harry entered the U.S. Army on February 28, 1943 at Ft. MacArthur, California. He served with the 234th Combat Engineer Battalion fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on December 2, 1945 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Harry was united in marriage to Ruby L. Brazeal on June 10, 1950 at Salem, Arkansas. Following his military service, Harry went to work for AT&T as a radio technician. This position transferred them to live in many locations all over the United States. In 1957, they made their home in Red Oak when AT&T erected the tower at Coburg. He retired after 38 years of service to AT&T. Harry was a member of the First Christian Church, and 50 plus year member of both the Red Oak Masonic Lodge #162 and Order of Eastern Star, having served as a Rainbow Dad. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers and a courier for the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Harry enjoyed hunting, woodworking and attending his grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Harry was preceded in death by his parents. Harry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruby Veon of Red Oak, IA; son, Larry Veon and wife Susan of Stanton, IA; daughters: Renee Speed and husband Gail of Indianapolis, IN; and Rhonda Oakleaf and husband Mike of Red Oak, IA; 10 grandchildren: Chris (Melanie) Veon, Matt (Stephanie) Veon, Kevin (Amy) Veon, Jenni (Ben) Ingersoll, Ian Speed, Kelsey Speed (Brian Hutchison), Holly Rider, Ross Oakleaf (Jamie Johnson), Alex Oakleaf and Austin Oakleaf; 9 great-grandchildren: Sarah Veon, Leyton Veon, Isley Veon, Aiden Ingersoll, Addison Ingersoll, Makayla Speed, Jaxston Rider, Caleb Johnson and Trinity Johnson; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church, Red Oak, IA Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery with military rites by the U.S. Army. Visitation with the family present Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Memorials to the First Christian Church or Red Oak Fire & Rescue Association.
