Harvey C. Fifield, 87, died Sunday, October 14, 2007 in Red Oak. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2007 at First United Methodist Church in Red Oak. Harvey was born October 3, 1920, in Woodbine, Iowa, minutes after his twin brother and best friend, Stephen. His parents were Floyd E. Fifield and Maude May Johnson Fifield. Harvey graduated from Logan High School in Logan, Iowa, and accepted an athletic scholarship at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, where he met his wife, Ruth Creighton, of Mediapolis, Iowa. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served as a B-24 bombardier based in Venosa, Italy, completing 35 sorties over Germany, Austria, Northern Italy, and Eastern Europe as part of the 15th Air Force, 485th Bomb Group, 830th Bomb Squadron. He was decorated for valor. After the war, Harvey finished his undergraduate degree at The University of Iowa and graduated from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1950. He served two years as a dentist in the Army Reserves at Ft. Riley, Kansas. In 1952 he opened his dental practice in Red Oak, where he served generations of patients and the community of Red Oak for 49 years, retiring in 2001 at age 80. He was elected to the Red Oak City Council in the mid 1950s to successfully implement fluoridation of the city water system. He was a longtime member of the Lion?s Club and the Iowa Dental Association, sang in the First United Methodist Church choir, and served his church in many other capacities. He enjoyed history, reading, hunting, fishing, family games, and following Hawkeye sports and the Chicago Cubs. Harvey is survived by his children: David Margaret Fifield of Pearland, Texas; Carol Fifield of Pattaya, Thailand, and Miami, Florida; James Martha Fifield of Des Moines; and Joan Harold Hendrix of Emerson; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and his two brothers, Stephen Fifield and George Fifield, and two sisters, Velva Braithwaite and Maurine Kuhl. Memorial contributions may be made to Red Oak Public Library or Red Oak Public Library Building Fund. Dr. Fifield's wishes were to donate his body to the University of Iowa for medical research. Memorial service will be held Monday, October 22, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, Red Oak. Visitation and luncheon following the service.
