Obituary

Harvey D. Gillispie was born January 6, 1916, in Auburn, Nebraska to Delbert and Fairy Harvey Gillispie. He died peacefully at Risen Son nursing home in Council Bluffs, Friday, December 24, 2010, with his wife Mary at his side, at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 18 days. The eldest of seven children, he grew up in Nebraska and Wyoming, graduating high school in Hawk Springs, WY, before his family moved to Massena, Iowa. There he met his future wife, Mary Alice Wagner. They married on March 8, 1942. During World War II, Harvey spent 3 1/2 years serving in the U.S. Army, in Iceland, England, and France, while Mary worked in Omaha at a "Martin Bomber" factory. After the war, they farmed in southwest Iowa and had six children before settling in Red Oak in l964. Harvey worked at Bloom & Lundgren until its closure, then at the Farmers Mercantile Co-op until his retirement in l981. In 2008, Harvey and Mary moved to the Risen Son retirement community in Council Bluffs. Even as his health declined, Harvey kept his cheerful disposition. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Julie McConnell in l991; son-in-law, Gary Moody in l993; and siblings: Robert, Ray, Jim and Barbara. Harvey is survived by his wife, Mary of Council Bluffs, IA; children: Jeff Janet Gillispie of Pompano Beach, FL; James Cherylee Gillispie of Sanger, TX; Joy Dan Lowery of O'Fallon, IL; Jon Gillispie of San Francisco, CA; and Jane Moody of Asheboro, NC; his dog, Jackson; grandchildren: J.J. and Becky Gillispie; Jeff Jayme; Brian Stephanie, and Scott Tiffany Martino; Sean and David Lowery; Mark Lisa McConnell and Stephanie Chris Worley; and Anne Marie, Mary, and Karen Moody; great-grandchildren: Samantha Worley, Matthew McConnell; and Zoey, Alex, Isabella, Hayleigh, and Beckham Martino; sister, Velda Berle Higgins of Newton, KS; brother, Bill Gillispie of Auburn, NE; sister-in-law, Audrey Stucky of Newton, KS; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family thanks everyone who helped care for Harvey in recent years, including the staff of Risen Son and Harvey's roommate Gene Gough. Harvey donated his body to the University of Iowa, for medical research. The family will hold a memorial service in the spring.
