Obituary

Helen Jean Bredberg, the daughter of Walter F. and Mable Clare (Edwards) Saville was born May 19, 1920 at Salem, Nebraska. She passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Red Oak Healthcare Community, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 26 days. Helen was raised in Salem, Nebraska and graduated from Salem High School in 1938. She continued her education at Peru State College, earning a teaching degree, graduating in 1942. Helen began her teaching career at Wales-Lincoln School in Wales, Iowa, where she also met her future husband, Archie. Helen was united in marriage to Glen Archie Bredberg on June 4, 1944 in Salem, Nebraska. In 1952, they made their home on their farm northeast of Red Oak. Helen took correspondence classes to renew her teaching certificate and substitute taught at the Red Oak High School and Junior High. She later worked for Van's Paint Store. While her children were growing up and involved in 4-H, she served as a 4-H leader. In July of 1972, Helen went to work for Iowa State University as the Montgomery County 4-H Aide with the Montgomery County Extension Office. She was inducted into the Montgomery County Hall of Fame, and in 2002, into the State 4-H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair. Helen was as active member of the First Christian Church, serving as an elder, a Sunday school teacher and circle leader. She kept busy with a big garden, picking and selling strawberries, one year picking over 200 quarts. Helen was an excellent pie baker, starting at the age of nine, making pies for the threshing crew. She even won the Best Apple Pie' at the Montgomery County Fair one year. Along with gardening and baking, Helen's hobbies included sewing, needle work and quilting. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie on July 19, 1999; son-in-law, Glen Christiansen; grandson, Douglas Christiansen and sister, Margaret Schultz. Helen is survived by two daughters: Jeanette Christiansen of Red Oak, IA; and Joyce McCullough & significant other Bob Shobe of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren: Jeff (Lori) Christiansen of Clarinda, IA; Michael (Erin) Christiansen of Elliott, IA; Brian Christiansen of Red Oak, IA; James McCullough of Omaha, NE; Julie (John) Butler of Cozad, NE; and Kelly McCullough of Omaha, NE; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church, Red Oak Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. JoAnn Thomas, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Wednesday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials to First Christian Church or Montgomery County Fair Building Project. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
