Helen Martha Fils Hollen was born June 11, 1923 to Ed and Myrtle (McCornack) Fils on a farm northwest of Creston, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 11 days. Helen was raised on the farm, and walked to Spaulding Center #5 School through eighth grade. She then attended Creston High School, and graduated in 1940. Helen attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO until contracting rheumatic fever, and returned to Creston for medical treatment. After recovering, she attended Creston Junior College (aka Southwestern Community College) and graduated in 1943, then furthered her education at Drake University, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, graduating with a B.S. degree in Education in 1945. Following graduation, she moved to Chicago where she was employed at Quaker Oats for a short time. She returned to Creston and substitute taught in the Creston Schools in 1946 - 47. Helen married Robert M. Hollen on Aug. 11, 1946 in Creston, IA. Doc's veterinary career took them to Mexico from 1947 - 49 while he was a federal veterinarian. In 1949, they returned to live on Helen's family farm. Helen became active in many clubs and organizations, including P.E.O., Elziver Reading Circle, Order of the Eastern Star, the Republican Party, the First Presbyterian Church, and Crestmoor Golf Club. Doc and Helen had one son, John Richard, who was born on Dec. 14, 1957. Beginning in the 1960's, Helen was employed as a sales clerk at Vetterick's Pharmacy in Creston, occasionally substitute taught for the Creston Schools, was manager at the Dairy Queen for two years, and later worked at Palm Clothing. Their farm became a Century Farm in 1983. In 2005, Helen's health problems forced the family to relocate her to Red Oak. After back surgery, cancer surgery and a few other procedures, she continued chemotherapy for liver cancer until late in December of 2012. During her time in Red Oak, she became active in the Presbyterian Church and Chapter HB of P.E.O., and enjoyed bridge clubs through P.E.O. as well as Red Oak Country Club, where she also became a member. She had an apartment where she spent most of her time, but resided at Stanton Care Center on and off when health necessitated it. She always enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Robert on Oct 3, 1989; and special family friend, Harvey C. Davis of Orient, IA. Survivors include her son, John Hollen and wife Elaine of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Kelsey Hollen of Cherokee, IA; and Andy Rea and wife Trina of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren: Amber and Jackson Rea; sister, Ruth Jackson of Creston, IA; Ruth's son, Doug Jackson and wife Carol and their daughter Meredith of West Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law, Margaret Stark and husband Wayne of Lawndale, CA; nieces: Lauri Drake and husband Jim of Carson, IA; Roxanne Maples and husband Chris of Reno, NV; Cathy Stark of Hawthorne, CA; and Lauri Stark of Oceanside, CA; nephews: Jeff Hollen and Bob Hollen and their families of Newport, OR; Greg Hollen and family of Corvallis, OR; Ron Stark of Oceanside, CA; and Rick Stark and wife EJ of Bellevue, ID; many special relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church, Red Oak, Iowa Rev. Caryn Pedersen, Officiating Graveside service will be held at the Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Iowa at 2:00 p.m. with a gathering to follow at the First Presbyterian Church in Creston. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak. A memorial is being established in Helen's name.
