Obituary

Howard Wayne Ward Sr., the son of John W. and Anna M. Nelson Ward was born July 30, 1935 in Wiota, Iowa. He passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 8 days. Howard was raised in the Wiota area and graduated in l954 from Wiota High School. He worked a couple of years for Walnut Grove in Atlantic, IA before moving to Shenandoah. Howard was united in marriage to Dorothy Bell Smith in March of l957. While in Shenandoah, he worked at different times for the tree and garden nurseries, a laundry service where he drove a delivery truck, and was the assistant manager for Farm Master which became Wicks Corp. They transferred him on to Wooster, OH in 1979. Howard then moved on to Woodland, CA for 2 years, before returning to Shenandoah. There he worked for Tiemyer and helped build the Wabash trace. He later worked for Dana Corporation in Atlantic, IA. Howard later married Barbara J. Wright on July 28, 1997. They made their home in Grant, IA. Howard enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling, working in his yard and flower gardens. He spent many hours with his grandchildren, following and attending their sporting events. He was an avid Big Red Nebraska fan. Howard's dog, Missy was also an important part of his life. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Dorothy; sisters: Pat Eukert; Leatha Wichs; Marilyn Cross; and grandson: Ben Hoover. Howard is survived by his wife, Barbara Ward of Grant, IA; children: Scott A. Ward and companion Lana Hooper of Columbus, NE; Christina M. Turnbull of Red Oak, IA; Howard Ward, Jr. and wife Laura of Essex, IA; Deb Helm and husband James of Stanton, IA; and Sandra Wright of Council Bluffs, IA; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers: Don and Jeri Ward of Atlantic, IA; Larry and Karen Ward of Wiota, IA; Ken and Judy Ward of Lincoln, NE; and Richard Janie of Plano, TX; and sister, Nola Brown of Anita, IA; nieces and nephews; and many friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn. Howard was cremated and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be direct to Juvenile Diabetes or American Caner Society Relay for Life Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
