Iola Alene Zumkeller, the daughter of John and Ethel (Merritt) Cook was born July 30, 1926 at Denver, Colorado. She passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2017 in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 91 years and 18 days.
Iola was raised in Denver, Colorado, where she attended school. She moved to Portland, Oregon in 1942, working in the shipyards during WW II. In 1945, Iola was united in marriage to William Tierney. They moved to Oakland, California in 1949, and later to French Camp, California. To this union, her son Jim was born. Iola later married Robert Zumkeller in July of 1961 at Carson City, Nevada. She moved to Carson, Iowa, in 1990 to care for her aunt, and in 1996, to Red Oak, Iowa, to be closer to her son and his family. Iola inherited her father's cooking skills as he was a chef in Denver, and she was an excellent cook. She also had a green thumb with plants. Iola loved her family dearly. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. Iola attended Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak.
Iola was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Cook.
Iola is survived by her son, James Tierney and wife Angie of Red Oak, IA; granddaughter, Lisa Schmid and husband Aaron of Red Oak, IA; two great-grandchildren: A.J. and Ashley Marie Schmid of Red Oak, IA; and sister, Peggy King of Council Bluffs, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
