L. Irene Lantz, the daughter of Allan and Ollie Churchman Bateman was born February 22, 1921 in Fremont County, Iowa, northwest of Shenandoah, Iowa. Irene passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 after an extended illness at Senior Suites of Urbandale, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 1 day. Irene was raised in Fremont County. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1938. Irene taught school for 5 years with Fremont County Schools and was also a 4-H Leader. Irene was united in marriage to Wayne R. K. Lantz on March 15, 1946 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Irene and Wayne made their home on a farm south of Red Oak until 1952, when they moved into Red Oak. She worked as a telephone operator and at J.C. Penney's before serving 25 years as secretary at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Red Oak. In 1992, Irene and Wayne moved to Des Moines, Iowa to be close to their sons. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak. Irene treasured her family and friends. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne on April 27, 2003; and brother, Lyle. Irene is survived by two sons: Terry Lantz and wife Beverly of Urbandale, IA; and Ricky Lantz and wife Donna of Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren: Brian Lantz and wife Holly of Urbandale, IA; Brady Lantz and wife Christin of Des Moines, IA; Jeremy Lantz and wife Beth of Clarinda, IA; Melisa Lantz and partner Rob Stukenholtz of Council Bluffs, IA; and Nicole Bright and husband Johnny of Council Bluffs, IA. She has eight great-grandchildren: Alyssa and Zackary Lantz of Urbandale, IA; Jaxon and Xzavier Lantz of Des Moines, IA; Ethan Lantz of Clarinda, IA; Riley Stukenholtz of Council Bluffs, IA; Skylar Lantz and Sebastian Bright of Council Bluffs, IA; sister, Joyce Skahill of Villisca, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Red Oak.
