Jack Edward Thompson, the son of Joseph H. and Francis Elizabeth (Smith) Thompson was born January 31, 1927 in Pilot Grove Township of Montgomery County, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Accura Healthcare, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 18 days.
Jack was raised in the Pilot Grove area and attended Plowman Country School. He graduated from Elliott High School in 1944. Jack worked that summer with a local guy who ran a Caterpillar doing dirt work. He said, "I made good money, $l.00/hour for 11 hour days." In the winter of 1944, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving during WW II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to the Elliott area where he was a truck driver for a short time. In September of 1947, Jack began working for the Montgomery County Secondary Roads Department on the surveyor crew. He transferred to the county shop and spent the next 44 years maintaining the road equipment. He made Red Oak his home in the 1950's. Jack was united in marriage to Marilyn M. Moon on April 2, 1958 and to this union a daughter, Jamie was born. In 1991, Jack retired from the Montgomery County Secondary Roads Department. He enjoyed collecting pocket watch fobs, of which he had hundreds. Jack also enjoyed helping Homer Focht with dirt work on weekends, and the company of Jamie's dog, Huxley. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Lorraine Post #67 and Montgomery County Veteran's Memorial Court of Honor having served several terms as Chairman. Jack loved his family and country dearly.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn on September 23, 1998; sister, Janet Milner Weston; brother, Glen Thompson; and brothers-in-law: Don Milner, William Weston and Robert Crossland.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Jamie J. Thompson of Red Oak, IA; brother, Jerry D. Thompson and wife, Kathy of Ankeny, IA; sisters: Jean Buzick of Webster City, IA and Margaret Crossland of Allen, TX; and sister-in-law, June Thompson of Atlanta, GA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Graveside Service will be held

Visitation with the family present will be held Tuesday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Memorials may be directed to the Montgomery County Veteran's Memorial Court of Honor.
Family and friends will meet at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home at 10:15 AM for procession to the cemetery.
