Obituary

James Everett Coffman, the son of James F. and Ruth (Bassinger) Coffman was born February 7, 1927 at Nebraska City, Nebraska. He passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2020 at the Red Oak Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 23 days.

Jim was raised in Nebraska City where he graduated from high school. He entered the U.S. Navy on May 2, 1944, serving during WW II as a radioman. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1946. Jim was united in marriage to Doris Parmenter on May 30, 1948 at Nebraska City, NE. Most of his life, Jim was a dry cleaner, first in Nebraska City and then in 1961, when he and Doris moved to Red Oak to work for Arnold Webering, who owned Finest Cleaners. Jim purchased Finest Cleaners in the early 1970's and continued to serve the community until his retirement in 1992, when the business was purchased by his son, Jim. He served his community in various capacities but is most remembered for his kindness and volunteer work. Jim was beloved by the Inman school students where he volunteered with the reading program for many years and also served as a crossing guard. Jim volunteered at Good Samaritan Society beginning when his wife was a resident and continuing for many years after her death. He was also known as the "candy man". If anyone needed a helping hand, he was there. Jim was a lifelong Nebraska Cornhusker fan as he had a lot of good times sharing his love for Nebraska football with anyone and everyone. Jim's friends at the pool hall where he played cards, meant so much to him. Jim rode a bicycle around town for many years, until the fall of 2019, when he had to give it up at age 92, due to failing health. Jim sold his house in 2015 and moved to Acorn Acres and in January of 2020 became a resident of Good Samaritan Society. Jim was a member to the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Court of Honor, a charter member of Red Oak Kiwanis Club and a past member of V.F.W.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris on July 6, 2007; three brothers: Robert, Les, and Dale; and his sister, Martha.

Jim is survived by his three children and their families: daughter, Jody (Joe) Hossle of rural Emerson, IA and their children: Justin (Michele) Hossle, Jenni (Kyle) Edwards and Jamie (Edward) Huff; son, Jim Coffman of Red Oak, IA; daughter, Ruth (Kevin) Breedlove of Tekamah, NE and their children: Kris (Mary) Breedlove, Andrew (Rachael) Breedlove and Randy Breedlove; 7 great-grandchildren: Aaron Hossle, McCartney and Josie Edwards, Jameson and Alexander Huff, Olivia and Hazel Breedlove; and sister-in-law, Sandy Davis; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.
