James Edward "Jim" Carmicheal, the son of Clifford and Lillian (Schulke) Carmicheal was born December 9, 1931 on his grandfather's farm at Naponee, Nebraska. He passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016 at his home south of Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 1 day.
Jim grew up in several communities in southwest Iowa and Nebraska, living wherever his father's work took the family. In 1950, he graduated from high school in Franklin, Nebraska and entered the U.S. Navy in May of l951. Jim was united in marriage to Phyllis Hinchee on July 19, 1953 at a country church near Carrollton, Ohio. They travelled the United States and made their home where Jim was stationed. Following 10 years in the Navy, he transferred into the U.S. Air Force and served another 10 years. Jim was honorably discharged on August 31, 1971, after dedicating 20 years to his country. The family moved to an acreage south of Red Oak, where it has been home ever since. In 1972, Jim started a second career with Eveready Battery Company and 23 years later, retired in 1996. Jim enjoyed working around his acreage with handyman tasks, gardening and caring for his horse, Gypsy. Jim cherished his children and was always involved in their lives, serving as a Cub Scout leader, T-ball coach, Bible School and Awana leader. He has been a devoted member of Gideons International since 1981. Jim was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Clarinda, Iowa, served many years as a core leader for Southwest Iowa Community Bible Study in Red Oak, and past member of the American Legion and V.F.W.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and 4 sisters: Beuna, Jeanne, Betty and Clarice.
Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Red Oak, IA; 4 children: Pam (Jim) Asleson of Lyle, MN, Dr. James Carmicheal of Marshalltown, IA, Tim Carmicheal of Plattsmouth, NE, and Lynne (Bill) Haas of Bellevue, NE; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and sister, Bernice Baird of Comanche, TX; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held
Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home

Visitation with the family will be held at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home 1 hour prior to the Celebration service, from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m.
Inurnment will be in the Omaha National Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Baptist Church, Clarinda or Gideons International.
Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
