James Frederick Pierce, the son of Herbert and Maude (Goultry) Chickering was born April 1, 1927 west of Villisca, Iowa. He passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 86 years. James was the youngest of 10 children. When his mother died, James at age two went to live with Dan and Annie (Cooney) Pierce of Villisca, Iowa. Dan and Annie later adopted him. His father, Herbert and family moved to Winterset, Iowa, but always kept in contact with James. James graduated from Nodaway High School in l945. He entered the U. S. Army Air Corps in July of l945, with basic training at Sheppard Air Base, Texas. James then received special training in North Carolina, Colorado and California. He was stationed in the Philippines and later Guam, where he was a M.P. guarding Japanese Prisoners of War. James was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Donna L. Bauer on August 15, 1948 in Villisca, Iowa. To this union were born four daughters, Deidra, Dorene, Doris and Denise. James and Donna lived on a farm all of their married lives. They rented farms and then purchased their farm northeast of Red Oak in l985. James was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak. He served as a trustee for Frankfort Township for 15 years. James was preceded in death by both sets of parents; wife, Donna on July 16, 2010; four sisters and four brothers. James is survived by four daughters: Deidra Ash and husband Tom of Lincoln, NE; Dorene Atkinson and husband Don of Red Oak, IA; Doris Barr of Red Oak, IA; Denise Manard of Red Oak, IA; 9 grandchildren: Scott Ash & wife Monica of Lincoln, NE; Kristy Barrett & husband Chad of Lincoln, NE; Mark Ash & wife Melissa of Lincoln, NE; Curtis Patterson & wife Carisa of Red Oak, IA; Jason Patterson of Red Oak, IA; Angie Matthews & husband Tim of Lincoln, NE; Nicole Barr of Omaha, NE; Nathan Barr and Caity Todd of Omaha, NE; Wayne Rogers & wife Lindsay of Omaha, NE; 12 great-grandchildren: Garrett & Ryleigh Patterson; Hayden & Ashlyn Barrett; Jonas Rogers; Eli, Tillie & Madison Ash; Eyan & Baylee Barr; and Lucas & Kelsey Matthews; sister, Betty Messerschmidt of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law, Mrs. Phyllis Chaney of Stanton, IA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many wonderful friends. James was cremated and no public services will be held.
