Obituary

Jane Carson Smith, the daughter of Earl W. and Lucille Price Carson was born December 16, 1919 in Moberly, Missouri. She passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009 at her home in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 8 days. Jane was raised in Topeka, Kansas. She graduated from Topeka High School in l938. Jane attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Grinnell College. Following graduation, she worked 10 years in the State Department for the United States Government in Washington D.C. Jane was united in marriage to Dr. Rodmond Smith on August 2, 1947 in Marshalltown, IA. They moved to Red Oak in l952. Jane was a member of the Red Oak First United Methodist Church; Red Oak Country Club; P.E.O. Chapter HB; and Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a past president. For 17 years, Jane had also served as chairman for the Red Cross Blood Mobile in Red Oak. Jane enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with her dear friends. She spent many hours crocheting afghans for family and friends. Jane enjoyed laughing and loved to have fun, along with ""doing things her way."" She was preceded in death by her parents and sister: Betty Purtzer. Jane is survived by two sons: David A. Smith and wife Wanda of Broomfield, CO and Jeff Smith of Elliott, IA; brother-in-law: Jean W. Purtzer of Greenfield, IA; niece: Ann; and nephew: Bill; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Rev. Fred Pilecki, Officiating Visitation with the family present on Monday evening, April 27 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home Memorials to First United Methodist Church, Red Oak Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
