Obituary

Janet Lou Ella Elwood, the daughter of Wilma Walker Perry was born December 12, 1958 at Columbus, Ohio. She passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 58 years, 6 months and 13 days.

Janet was raised in rural southern Ohio. The family moved to Villisca, Iowa in 1968, where she attended grade school and high school. Janet met the love of her life, Rusty Elwood, at the Shenandoah skating rink when she was 15 years old. They were united in marriage December 27, 1975 in Clearmont, Missouri. While Rusty was in the military they lived in Germany, where their oldest daughter was born, and El Paso, TX. They returned to Villisca in 1984. Janet graduated from Iowa Western Community College with a degree from the secretarial program. Janet had previously worked as a CNA and most recently for the US Census as a crew leader. Her most rewarding job had been as a caregiver to her mother, children, grandchildren, in-laws and husband. She learned to quilt from her mother and enjoyed showing off that skill to her family in the form of warm quilts with beautiful designs and patterns. She was always proud when she figured out a new pattern or conquered a new skill. Besides quilting, she was infamous for her baking. Many a grandchild was lured into a lengthy conversation at Grandma's table by the delicious treats she offered. She knew all of their favorites and would go out of her way to let them know to, "Stop by! Grandma has treats!" She took her basketball bracket serious during March Madness and loved to tease that she would win it all. Though, she only did once. Janet was an amazing mother, grandmother and wife and she will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, siblings: Reva Fooce, Lilly Faye Perry and Barb McNichols; father-in-law, Ira Elwood, and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donald and Laurel Smith.

Janet is survived by her husband, Rusty Elwood of Villisca, IA; daughters: Jennifer (Tracey) Johnson of Villisca, Iowa and Jamie (Travis) Bahn of Villisca, IA; 5 grandchildren: Trevor Maeder, Dustin "DJ" Maeder, Ryan Maeder, Emily Bahn and Rogan Bahn; siblings: Elza (Carol) Perry of Portsmouth, OH, Laura (Karl) Hanners of St. Petersburg, FL, Russ (Martha) Perry of Tulsa, OK, Pauline Conley of Columbus, OH, Sam (Lou) Perry of Tulsa, OK, Mary (Russell) Currin of Bruce Crossing, MI and Deb Mattson of Villisca, IA; sisters-in-law: Jackie (Don) Grassia of McCook, NE and Susan (Kirk) McConnell of Boliver, MO; brothers-in-law: Kent (Dena) Elwood of Red Oak, IA and Tom (Christi) Elwood of Stanton, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives, fellow quilters and friends.

May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn.
