John Donovan Sellergren, the son of Arvid and Emma Swanson Sellergren was born on May 25, 1915 in Stanton, Iowa. He died on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at the Stanton Care Center, Stanton, Iowa at the age of 93 years and 14 days. Donovan was a lifetime resident of Stanton growing up on a farm just south of town. He graduated from Stanton High School in 1933. Donovan then graduated from Red Oak Junior College and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics at the University of Iowa in 1939. Donovan was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1941. He played the sousaphone in the Army's 30th Infantry Division marching band, stationed in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida. He also played string bass in the dance band during his years in the Army. Donovan was released from service in 1945. On June 20, 1943 Donovan was united in marriage to Marjorie Isaacson at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. Following his release from the service, Donovan and Marjorie made their home near Stanton. He farmed south of Stanton beginning in 1947 until his retirement. At different times in his life he also worked as a Farm Bureau Insurance salesman, Montgomery County field assessor, bookkeeper at the Stanton Cooperative, mathematics teacher at Stanton High School, and was bookkeeper at Posten Sales of Villisca for 27 years. Donovan was a lifelong member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. He served on the church council, as church treasurer, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the church choir for many years. Donovan was a 60-year member of Ernie Johnson Post 406 of the American Legion. He served on the board of the Montgomery County Historical Society and the Care Review Board of the Stanton Care Center. Donovan was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Clifford Isaacson. Survivors include his wife: Marjorie of Stanton, IA; son: John Sellergren of Stanton, IA; daughters: Ruth and husband Dale Vander Schaaf of Ames, IA; and Martha and husband David Cole of Meeker, CO; grandchildren: Kristen Vander Schaaf and husband Scott Samet of Ames, IA; Diana and husband Todd Givens of Des Moines, IA; Nathan Vander Schaaf of Ames, IA; Emily McCoy of Fort Collins, CO; Susan McCoy of Homer, AK; Marie and husband Aaron Zimenoff of Fort Collins, CO; great-grandchildren: Savannah Givens of Des Moines, IA and Emily Samet of Ames, IA; brother and sister-in-law: Leland and Marian Sellergren of Stanton, IA and sister-in-law: Phyllis Isaacson of Dassel, MN; other relatives and many friends.
